Daniel Furuto joined Purdue baseball as an assistant coach in July 2021, reuniting with Greg Goff after Furuto played for Goff on a Division II College World Series team and also worked with him at Campbell. The 2022-23 school year will be his second at Purdue; he continues to serve as director of the program's youth and prospect camps.
Furuto has 12 seasons of coaching experience at the college level, most recently as an assistant at UAB and Georgia State.
A four-year starting outfielder for Goff at the University of Montevallo from 2005 to 2008, Furuto helped Montevallo qualify for the 2006 DII College World Series and win a program-record 47 games his junior season. After working under Goff at Campbell for two seasons (2011-12), Furuto returned to Montevallo as assistant/associate head coach for four seasons (2015-18).
“I’ve known Daniel since he was a student-athlete, watching him grow as a player and later as a coach,” Goff says. “He’s a great addition to our staff here at Purdue after his 10-plus years of experience with some quality programs. He’s done it all from coaching to camps to recruiting. He’ll be an important part of our practices and future success on the field.”

Furuto maintains a lead role with outfield defensive instruction and spearheads the Boilermakers' pregame infield-outfield sessions. He orchestrates the team's collective hitting approach and the base running, helping Purdue set team records for stolen bases (116) and runs per game (7.44) during the 2022 campaign. Most importantly, he keeps the players organized with practice plans and throughout workouts. Furuto served as the first base coach for every game of 2022 and moved across the diamond to take over at third when needed. His was also among the primary contributors to opponent scouting reports.
Including his seasons with Union College (2013-14) and Abilene Christian (2019), the Birmingham, Alabama, native has gained valuable experience from North Carolina to Texas. He served as the recruiting coordinator at UAB, GSU and Montevallo. UAB’s recruiting class earned a top-100 ranking in November from Perfect Game, the program’s first such honor since 2012. Furuto has coached 23 all-conference players, including five All-Americans. He’s also seen 21 of his former players become MLB draft picks, highlighted by five big leaguers. UAB outfielder Jess Davis was a national ABCA/Rawlings gold glove winner for the 2021 season.
As a two-time All-Gulf South Conference honoree, Furuto helped Goff’s Montevallo teams win a combined 90 games during the 2006 and 2007 seasons. He was the MVP of the 2006 NCAA South Central Regional, a tournament title that sent Montevallo to the College World Series. His junior season featured a three-homer game, the first by a Montevallo player since the 80s, and a return trip to the championship game of the South Central Regional. He finished his career as a .330 hitter and remains the program’s all-time leader in hit by pitch. Furuto joined the program shortly after Goff was hired in the summer of 2003, redshirting his first year at Montevallo.
Goff and Furuto also won 40 games together at Campbell, with the Camels’ 2012 team enjoying a breakthrough 41-win season and 24-win improvement. It marked the beginning of a three-year stretch in which Campbell was 131-49.
Furuto’s final seasons at Union and Montevallo were also very successful campaigns. Union went 34-20 in 2014 and Montevallo was 35-19 in 2018. Abilene Christian’s rise to its first Southland Conference title this season under head coach Rick McCarty, who Goff and Furuto worked with at Campbell, in many ways began in 2019 with Furuto on staff. ACU set 13 team records in its first competitive campaign as a DI program.
Futuro helped Montevallo return to the DII Regionals in 2018, the program’s first appearance since his junior campaign, and a No. 20 final national ranking. In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, the Falcons finished in the top 15 nationally in runs scored and home runs.
Furuto also spent three summers with the Lima Locos of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. He was Lima’s head coach in 2012, leading the team to a 24-15 record and a share of the league title. He got his start in coaching as an assistant with the Locos in 2009 and 2010, highlighted by a 28-win summer as the GLSCL champs in 2009.
Furuto earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Montevallo in 2008 and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Union College in 2014.
