WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue swimming & diving teams will celebrate the holidays in the Hawaiian Islands, traveling to Oahu for their annual winter training camp that will feature multiple weeks of two-a-day practices.

The swimmers fly from Chicago-O'Hare to Honolulu on Sunday and the divers are set to join their teammates on Dec. 26. The Boilermakers fly home Thursday, Jan. 4 and spring semester classes begin Monday, Jan. 8.

The Boilermakers will be staying only two blocks from Waikiki Beach. They'll be training at the Iolani School's Dillingham Pool, an outdoor facility located just across the Ala Wai Canal from their condominium accommodations. Additional practices will be held at the University of Hawaii's Duke Aquatic Complex, which is also an outdoor facility.

Daily practices are set for 7 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. (local time). Dryland and weight training sessions are also part of the daily itinerary.

The student-athletes will be chronicling their adventures and experiences on Oahu at the Hawaiian Training Trip blog here at PurdueSports.com as well as daily Instagram takeovers of the @PurdueWSwim account.

The Purdue men are scheduled to compete against the University of Hawaii on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Teams are no longer required to compete in a meet as part of a winter training trip, but men's coach Dan Ross has always looked to add a meet when possible.

The Boilermakers will be traveling to Hawaii for the first time since the 2013-14 season. Student-athletes are required to cover a large portion of the cost of their airfare. Fort Lauderdale has also been a regular destination for Purdue's winter training trips. The current rotation of warm-weather destinations is tailored in such a way that a student-athlete has an opportunity to travel to both Honolulu and Fort Lauderdale during their four-year college career. In the other two years, the Boilermakers hold their winter training camp at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

With the fall semester curriculum commitments complete, the student-athletes have an opportunity to focus strictly on training over the winter break. The annual winter training camp helps the Boilermakers gear up for the spring semester portion of their schedules, highlighted by the championship season (mid-February through March).

QUOTING THE COACHES
- John Klinge: "It's Hawaii -- every day is great there. I'm sure we'll have some people that are homesick on Christmas, but the benefits far outweigh it. We'll have a great time on Christmas. We'll take them out for a nice meal and do some things together as a team. Hawaii is beautiful. We're so fortunate to be able to do this. It is different, having Christmas in Hawaii, but it's a good different."
- Dan Ross: "We have a plan. We're smart enough to know what to do. It's easy to bury somebody when you're there for so many days. You've got to make sure they recover. When you get better as a swimmer is during the recovery. The workout is huge. But you can have all the workouts you want, if you don't recover, you're not going to get any better. It's all part of the teaching process."
