After three seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with Purdue wrestling, Jake Sueflohn (pronounced SOO-flown) was elevated to assistant coach in June 2019 and to head assistant coach in October 2026. He enters his 11th season with the Boilermakers in 2026-27.
In his seven years as a full-time staff member, Sueflohn has played an instrumental role in the development of Purdue’s middle and upper weights. He has been especially influential in the development of Joey Blaze, who became Purdue’s youngest NCAA finalist in at least 75 years in 2025 before earning his second All-America honor in 2026.
Sueflohn has helped produce two national finalists, 10 All-Americans, 59 NCAA qualifiers and 54 Big Ten placewinners in his 10 seasons at Purdue.
Purdue head coach Tony Ersland recruited Sueflohn to join the Boilermakers’ staff in July 2016, just as he recruited the Watertown, Wisconsin, native to Nebraska out of high school. As a Husker, Sueflohn was a four-time NCAA qualifier and four-time Big Ten placewinner.
Sueflohn compiled a career record of 109-32 (.773) at Nebraska, wrestling all but one season at 149 pounds. He twice led the Huskers in major decisions, recording 35 in his career.
Sueflohn qualified for the NCAA Championships at 149 pounds in 2013, 2014 and 2016 after qualifying at 141 pounds as a true freshman in 2012. At the Big Ten Championships, he reached the 149-pound finals in back-to-back seasons, finishing as the runner-up as a sophomore in 2013 and a junior in 2014. He placed three times at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, highlighted by a runner-up finish in 2013. That same season, he won the Reno Tournament of Champions at 149 pounds.
Sueflohn was honored numerous times for his accomplishments on and off the mat. He received the Nebraska Granite Award, which recognized his toughness, as well as the Most Dedicated Award and the Tom Osborne Citizenship Award. In the classroom, Sueflohn earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in four semesters and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2014.
His wrestling career continued after college, as he competed in several senior-level freestyle events and earned a third-place finish at the 2018 Marine Corps U.S. Open. He advanced to the semifinals with a win over Evan Wick before defeating Wick again on the consolation side. Sueflohn also recorded an 11-0 technical fall over Quinton Godley in the third-place bout.
Ersland recruited Sueflohn out of Arrowhead High School, where he was a two-time Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association champion and went 100-1 during his final two seasons. Sueflohn finished his high school career with a 188-10 (.950) record. He also earned All-America honors in 2011 with a third-place finish at 145 pounds at the ASICS/Vaughn Junior Freestyle National Championships.
Sueflohn received his Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with concentrations in communications, psychology and sociology, from Nebraska in August 2016.
