WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's final road series of the season takes the Boilermakers to Bloomington for the seventh time in the last eight years as the rivalry series with Indiana gets played in the month of May for the first time since 2014.

First pitch at Bart Kaufman Field is set for 6 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. Purdue has played 13 games at IU's ballpark since 2016, its most of any Big Ten stadium besides Alexander Field.

The Boilermakers are in the thick of the Big Ten Tournament chase with two weekends remaining in the conference season. Purdue is in a four-way tie for fifth place. Illinois is the most viable challenger to unseat a member of that quartet among the eight-team tournament field, but the Fighting Illini only have one Big Ten series remaining. And it's a tough one this weekend in New Jersey, where Rutgers is 14-3 at home this season. Meanwhile, eight of the Illini's 11 conference wins have come at home.

The primary tiebreaker is always head-to-head records. In the event of teams having not played each, as is the case with Purdue vs. Illinois and Michigan this season, the tiebreaker becomes records vs. common Big Ten opponents. Common opponents is the also the tiebreaker utilized in the event of ties involving three or more teams when they have all not played each other.

Purdue has won five series over six weekends for the first time since claiming six straight series wins during their 2012 Big Ten championship season. The Boilermakers have only been swept in a three-game weekend series once this year, that coming at defending national champion Ole Miss in early March.

However, Purdue faces a tough test the final two weekends, beginning this weekend against an Indiana team that leads the Big Ten 35 overall wins – 22 coming at home. The Hoosiers won their first 15 home games of the season and three of their four defeats in Bloomington came at the hands of league-leading Maryland. The Terrapins played Purdue and IU in consecutive weekends and regained the inside track to claiming consecutive Big Ten titles by sweeping the Hoosiers the final weekend of April. Indiana has rebounded with four straight wins since, including a midweek win against a 30-win Xavier team Wednesday in Cincinnati.

A rubber game has decided the last three Indiana-Purdue weekend series dating back to 2018. The home team has won all three of those rubber games. That falls in line with how the home team has had a decided edge in the series dating back to 2007. Unfortunately for the Boilermakers, since 2013 – the year Alexander Field and Bart Kaufman Field both opened – 14 of the last 21 meetings have been played in Bloomington.

There were 61 combined runs scored in last year's Indiana-Purdue series, which punctuated the highest scoring week in the history of Alexander Field – 108 runs over five games from April 5 to 10. The Boilermakers won the series by surviving a 16-15 slugfest in the rubber game.

While Purdue has used the same three starting pitchers in the same order for every weekend of Big Ten play – with that trio throwing 100 2/3 of the 158 innings (64%) – IU has had seven pitchers start a conference game this year. In Big Ten play, 17 pitchers have taken the mound at least once for the Hoosiers. Seventeen is also the number of Indiana pitchers that have worked at least 10 innings for Purdue alum Dustin Glant's staff this year. Luke Sinnard (85 Ks, .248 B/Avg in 66 2/3 IP) as the Friday starter and Ryan Kraft (5 Wins, 5 Saves in 17 App) as the relief ace are the two solidified roles for IU.

Brock Tibbitts (.377/.469/.617, 25 XBH, 57 RBI), Phillip Glasser (.360/.455/.517, 18 2B, 29 BB, 11 SB) and Devin Taylor (.340/.459/.707, 13 HR, 50 RBI) headline the lineup, which seems to have found a better balance of power potential and strikeout rate this year.

For Purdue, with Evan Albrecht having reached the 200 career games played mark this week, the benchmark watch moves to the number 100. Friday, Khal Stephen (96) looks to become the Boilermakers' ninth pitcher to reach the 100 career strikeouts mark as a sophomore. Stephen also shares the Big Ten lead with seven wins, four coming in conference play as he's helped Purdue go 5-1 on Fridays in Big Ten play.

If Paul Toetz starts all three games of the series as expected, he'll become the first Boilermaker since Skyler Hunter (110 from 2017 to 2019) to start 100 consecutive games. Toetz started 43 of IU's 44 games in 2021 as a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American before transferring to Purdue. The Boilermakers lead the Big Ten with 94 stolen bases and are on pace to record consecutive 100-steal seasons for the first time in team history.
