EAST LANSING, Mich. — In the game-opener, which included an hour and a half rain delay before the first pitch was thrown, the Purdue Boilermakers fell 8-9 at Michigan State. The Boilermakers fought hard, posting four runs in the top of the seventh and ending the game with a runner on second and the game-tying run out at first, a call that umpires headed to the replay booth to confirm. With the day's result, Purdue moves to 21-27 (4-14 Big Ten) while Michigan State improves to 13-28 (3-15 Big Ten).
The Boilermakers out-hit the Spartans, 13-6 and went .394 from the plate while holding them to .231.
Purdue found momentum in the top of the seventh, powered by freshman leadoff Alivia Meeks' first career hit, which came in double fashion. Khloe Banks followed it up with her first career home run, adding three Boilermaker runs to bring the team within two of tying the game up with just one out.
Alex Echazarreta notched a two-run homer to left field in the top of the first, marking the fourth home run in five games for the Reston, Virginia, native. Sophomores Jade Moy and Olivia McFadden each recorded RBI singles in the fourth, scoring Khloe Banks and Kiara Dillon, respectively.
Meanwhile, Tyrina Jones went 3-4 from the plate, leading the team with a .341 batting average.
Echazarreta entered in relief, tossing six strikeouts over her 4.1 innings pitched, marking the most K's thrown in a Big Ten game this season. Starting pitcher Madi Elish received her third loss of the season (8-3).
