2019-20 Academic All-Big Ten Honors: Winter / Spring
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Eighty-four Purdue student-athletes have been honored with Academic All-Big Ten accolades, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday.
The 84 honorees are the most Purdue has ever earned in the fall semester since at least 1999, when the women's soccer program was first recognized to bring the Boilermaker's fall sport total to five. It also is the most since 87 were recognized in the spring of 2016.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be members of a fall sport – men's and women's cross country, football, soccer and volleyball – be enrolled full-time for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Purdue's fall 2019 honorees feature 35 football players, 24 women's soccer players, nine women's and eight men's cross country runners and eight volleyball players.
Football's 35 student-athletes recognized breaks its previous record for most Academic All-Big Ten honors, set last season with 29, while the women's soccer program also set an all-time best mark, eclipsing the 16 earned most recently in 2018. The volleyball team's total is its most since 10 were recognized in 2013, and the men's cross country team had its most since 13 in 2015.
Additionally, three Boilermakers were recognized with a perfect 4.00 GPA: sophomore men's cross country runner Ian Hunter, junior women's soccer player Hannah Melchiorre and junior women's cross country student-athlete Megan Slamkowski. Melchiorre's recognition comes after she was named the second CoSIDA Academic All-America in program history last week.
A total of 1,385 Big Ten student-athletes were recognized this fall across seven league-sponsored sports.
