2017 Fall Academic All-Big Ten

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sixty Boilermakers have been recognized for their continued success in the classroom with Academic All-Big Ten honors, as the conference office announced the fall honorees for the 2017-18 school year.

Football led the way with 27 Academic All-Big Ten student-athletes. Women's cross country and women's soccer both had 11 honorees. Men's cross country (7) and volleyball (4) also had multiple student-athletes recognized.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten acclaim, student-athletes must be in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Two-time Academic All-America honoree Ashley Evans, volleyball's senior setter, headlines Purdue's Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the fall. Unanimous All-Big Ten right side hitter Sherridan Atkinson also garnered academic all-conference honors. Together they helped lead volleyball to at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in the last 15 years.

Purdue football finished strong to punctuate a turnaround campaign with the program's first bowl bid since 2012. Danny Ezechukwu, Da'Wan Hunte, Joe Schopper and Jacob Thieneman all earned both Academic All-Big Ten and honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition this fall. Both starting quarterbacks, Elijah Sindelar and David Blough, also garnered Academic All-Big Ten accolades.

Purdue women's soccer also enjoyed a memorable turnaround campaign, winning 10 games and returning to the Big Ten Tournament in its finest season of the decade. Four-year starter and third team All-Big Ten defender Vanessa Korolas headlines soccer's academic all-conference honorees. She started all 73 of the Boilermakers' games since the start of her college career in 2014.

Cross Country's Emma Benner, a second team All-Big Ten and academic all-conference honoree, qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. Five of the seven men's runners to be honored as Academic All-Big Ten also competed at the conference championship meet. Together they led Purdue to its best Big Ten finish (fifth place) since 1986. Jaret Carpenter led the way as a first team All-Big Ten honoree.

The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,253 student-athletes as Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the fall sports season. That total includes 435 from football, 312 from soccer, 306 from cross country, 111 from field hockey and 89 from volleyball.
