Tony Ersland enters his 13th season as Purdue's head wrestling coach in 2026-27, having guided the Boilermakers through one of the program's most successful stretches in recent history. Under his leadership, Purdue has combined national success on the mat with excellence in the classroom, producing five All-Americans over the past four seasons, seven top-30 NCAA Championship finishes in the last eight tournaments and a program-record 17 Academic All-Big Ten selections in 2026.
Entering the 2026-27 campaign, Ersland owns a 99-89 dual record, ranking third in school history in career victories. His next dual win will be the 100th of his Purdue tenure. It will move him into a tie with Claude Reeck (1938-69) for second-most all-time in program history.
This year marks Ersland's 30th season as a Division I wrestling coach and his 23rd season of coaching in the Big Ten Conference.

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT
Ersland has coached two NCAA finalists, nine All-Americans and 66 Big Ten placewinners during his Purdue tenure, including Matt Ramos, Joey Blaze and Parker Filius. Under his guidance, Purdue has consistently developed nationally ranked wrestlers, averaging six NCAA qualifiers per season while matching the program record with eight qualifiers four different times.
Ersland coached Ramos (125 lbs. in 2023) and Blaze (157 lbs. in 2025) to NCAA runner-up finishes, helping them become the 13th and 14th national finalists in Purdue history.
Additionally, five Boilermakers achieved NWCA All-America status in lieu of the canceled 2020 NCAA Championships: Devin Schroder (125), Griffin Parriott (149), Kendall Coleman (157), Dylan Lydy (174) and Christian Brunner (197).
Before Purdue, Ersland helped develop 86 NCAA qualifiers, 28 All-Americans, four NCAA champions and two Dan Hodge Trophy winners across 17 years as an assistant coach at the Division I level.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Purdue has set a new program record for Academic All-Big Ten selections four times under Ersland, including each of the past two years, most recently with 17 honorees in 2026. His teams have also produced 17 different NWCA Scholar All-Americans (36 total honors) and four Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.
The Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship is a $7,500 scholarship to be used toward graduate degree education: Andrew Hoselton (2016), Ben Thornton (2019), Dylan Lydy (2020), and Thomas Penola (2023) all earned the prestigious reward under Ersland's purview.
In total, 137 Academic All-Big Ten honors have been garnered by 55 Boilermaker wrestlers in the Ersland era.
RECRUITING
Ersland has elevated Purdue's recruiting profile with 24 top-100 signees, six top-15 recruiting classes and seven top-20 classes. Three of those top-15 classes have come in the past four recruiting cycles.
Purdue was one of just eight schools nationally to sign eight or more top-250 recruits in the class of 2026, and one of three schools in the Big Ten.
PERSONAL
In 29 years as a Division I coach, Ersland has coached a total of 156 NCAA qualifiers, 37 All-Americans, four NCAA champions and two Dan Hodge Trophy winners.
Before arriving at Purdue, Ersland spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Nebraska after previous coaching stops at Iowa State, Northwestern, Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.
During his tenure at Nebraska (2006-14), the Huskers racked up a 102-41-2 dual record, seven top-20 team finishes at the NCAA Championships and 17 All-America honors. He played a significant role in the development of Jordan Burroughs, the 2011 Dan Hodge Trophy winner, two-time NCAA champion, six-time world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist.
Before Nebraska, Ersland served as an assistant coach for the Cyclone Wrestling Club in Ames, Iowa, from 2005-06. Ersland worked with Iowa State NCAA champions Trent Paulson and David Zabriskie among other multiple-time NCAA qualifiers and All-Americans.
Ersland's familiarity with the Big Ten extends beyond his time at Purdue and Nebraska. Prior to his stint in Ames, Ersland was the head assistant coach at Northwestern from 2000-05. While working with the Wildcats, he was instrumental in the success of Jake Herbert, another former Dan Hodge Trophy winner and two-time NCAA champion who went on to place seventh at the 2012 Olympics.
Before Northwestern, Ersland was the head assistant wrestling coach at Northern Illinois from 1999-2000 after getting his start as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan from 1997-99.
A native of Humboldt, Iowa, Ersland wrestled at the University of Iowa under legendary coach Dan Gable, helping the Hawkeyes win three NCAA team championships and four Big Ten titles as a student-athlete. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Iowa in 1997 and a master's degree in athletic administration from Central Michigan in 1999.
Ersland and his wife, Carolyn, have twin sons, Mason and Jaxon.
