WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Saturday’s home opener at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center highlights weekend No. 2 of competition for the Purdue Swimming & Diving teams while also marking the first of five full co-ed meets for the Boilermakers this season.
The Purdue women open the weekend with a Big Ten triple dual at Iowa, a meet that will also feature No. 23 UCLA. Action is set for 4 p.m. ET at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, which is also serving as the host site of the women’s Big Ten Championships in February. Friday will mark the first time the Boilermakers have competed against UCLA in dual meet action. Iowa and UCLA both no longer sponsor men’s programs – the Bruins discontinuing their men’s team in the spring of 1994 and the Hawkeyes doing likewise in the spring of 2021.
The Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate once again serves as Purdue’s home opener. Saturday’s schedule features diving starting at 11 a.m. and swimming getting underway at noon. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center in August 2001. Two months later, the Boilermakers hosted the annual Indiana Intercollegiate in-state showcase for the first time.
Admission is free for all meets at the Burke Aquatic Center except the Big Ten Championships, which the men are hosting the final week of February this season.

Iowa is among the eight different opponents the Purdue women have defeated during their current 11 consecutive dual meets victories during the fall semester, a streak which dates back to the 2023-24 season opener. The Boilermakers extended the streak with an Oct. 2 victory at Illinois. They have not visited Iowa City since the 2020 Big Ten Championships and have not competed in a dual at Iowa since sweeping Missouri State and the Hawkeyes in a co-ed triple dual in November 2016.
Excluding the seasons they served as the championship meet host in 2017 and 2024, the Purdue women have not competed at the site of the Big Ten Championships during the regular season since the 2014-15 campaign (Ohio State hosted).
Saturday in West Lafayette, Purdue, Ball State, IU Indy, Valparaiso, DePauw, Indiana Wesleyan and Manchester will all have co-ed representation at the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate. They’ll be joined by the Butler women and Indiana State’s divers (women).
No breaks coupled with flyover starts typically allows the meet to wrap up by 3:30 p.m. Last year a 500 freestyle relay – featuring 10 swimmers per team all racing a 50-yard leg – replaced the traditional 500 free individual race. This year, that event will be held last in place of the 200 free relay.
A 25-yard shootout event will make its debut at the Indiana Intercollegiate this year – with one entry per team, per gender. The stroke (four traditional plus underwater) is randomly determined on the videoboard before each 25-yard leg of the event. The swimmer to finish last in each 25-yard leg is eliminated until it’s a 1-v-1 final. The Boilermakers previously competed in the event at the season-opening Be Better Invitational in Michigan the previous two seasons.
A notable name was added to Purdue’s first large meet of the season in the summer of 2023. The in-state showcase is now known as the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate, with the moniker recognizing the longtime head coach of the Boilermakers who retired in June 2023 after 42 years as a staff member. Ross introduced the Indiana Intercollegiates meet for the 2001-02 season as the Boilermakers moved into the Burke Aquatic Center. For more than 20 years, Ross’ inclusive philosophy led to the meet annually featuring a bevy of Indiana-based teams of all sizes and divisions (NCAA and NAIA) competing alongside each other on an October Saturday at one of the state’s premier facilities.
Since its debut 25 years ago, the Dan Ross Indiana Intercollegiate has been held every fall except 2020. It annually serves as the largest single-day home meet of the season for the Boilermakers. After last year’s Oct. 11 meet date was the earliest it had been held since 2009 (Oct. 10), the Oct. 24 date for the 25th anniversary of the meet marks the latest it has been held since 2013 (Oct. 26).
