WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Following a 44-19 season-opening victory over Indiana State, Purdue Football remains at home for another non-conference matchup. The Boilermakers host Wake Forest from Ross-Ade Stadium at noon on FS1.

 

QUICK HITS

  • This weekend, Purdue celebrates the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Boilermakers that went 9-2 and defeated USC 14-13 in the 1967 Rose Bowl Game. A team captain from that season who also intercepted the potential game-winning two-point conversion in that game, George Catavolos, will serve as Purdue’s Honorary Captain for Saturday’s game against Wake Forest.
  • Barry Odom became just the ninth Purdue head coach to win his first two season openers, including the first since Jim Colletto (1991-92).
    In the season opener, Brock Brownfield became the first true freshman to ever start on the offensive line in the season opener for Purdue since freshmen were deemed eligible in 1972.
  • Purdue holds a 21-18-3 record over current football members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, facing an ACC team for just the ninth time this century.
  • Don Saunders’ 35-yard interception return against Indiana State was Purdue’s first pick-six since 2022 when Cory Trice Jr. took one to the house in a win over Indiana that clinched the Big Ten West Division title for the Boilermakers.
  • Sixteen players made their first starts as Boilermakers in the season-opening victory over Indiana State.
  • With six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown, FAU transfer Asaad Waseem became the first Boilermaker to eclipse 100 receiving yards in his Purdue debut since Charlie Jones in 2022 (vs. Penn State).
  • The temperature for the season opener was 93 degrees at kickoff with the feel like temperature reaching 103 degrees. It marked Purdue’s warmest night game since at least 2000. 

ROSE BOWL BOILERS

  •  This weekend, Purdue celebrates the 60th anniversary of the 1966 Boilermakers that went 9-2 and appeared in the Rose Bowl Game for the first time in school history.
  • The fifth-ranked Boilermakers defeated USC 14-13 in the game (Jan. 2, 1967). Fullback Perry Williams scored both touchdowns, defensive halfback George Catavolos intercepted the potential game-winning two-point conversion attempt with 2:28 remaining, and defensive halfback John Charles recorded 11 tackles and a key fumble recovery to be selected the game’s Most Valuable Player. 
  • College Football Hall of Famer, Pro Football Hall of Famer Bob Griese ended his Purdue career with a three-year record of 22-7-1. That included two seasons as an All-American, including the 1966 campaign. 
  • The Boilermakers finished the season ranked No. 6 in the Coaches Poll and No. 7 in the AP Poll. 

BOILERS VS. THE ACC

  • Purdue is 21-18-3 all-time against current football members of the Atlantic Coast Conference
  • Pitt is the only ACC member that the Boilermakers have played more than Wake Forest. Purdue holds a 4-3 record against the Panthers, while sporting a 4-1 series advantage over the Demon Deacons. 
  • Purdue is facing an ACC team for just the ninth time this century.

 

THE KID CAN KICK

  • True freshman Jacobo Echeverria Lozano wasted little time putting his highly ranked right leg to use in week one against Indiana State, connecting on a field goal on the opening drive of the year. 
  • The freshman split the uprights a trio of times from 39, 27 and 25 yards for the most kicks in a game by a freshman at Purdue going back to 1995. They also tied for the ninth most by a freshman in a season opener nationally over that same span. 
  • The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is four field goals shy of cracking the Purdue freshman top three. 
  • Adding in his 5-for-5 on PATs, Echeverria Lozano's 14 points ranked fourth among all freshmen in week one, and he was the only kicker on the list. Nebraska's Jamal Rule, BYU's Legend Glasker and Syracuse's Shavane Anderson Jr. all scored three touchdowns. 

 

HE'S YA BOY, IJEBOI

  • Fame Ijeboi showed flashes in his Purdue debut when he rushed 11 times for 87 yards and a touchdown.
  • The transfer from Minnesota impressively tied for sixth overall and was the highest-graded running back in offensive grade (93.8) with at least 25 offensive snaps, per PFF.
  • Ijeboi paced the Purdue backfield by 55 yards. He added two receptions for 30 yards.
  • The sophomore entered West Lafayette off a 441-yard campaign with the Golden Gophers in 2025. 

    WASEEM DOWN THE SEAM
  • One of the newest Purdue wide receivers, FAU transfer Asaad Waseem made an immediate impact in his Boilermaker debut.
  • Waseem found open space down the field, hauling in six receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown. 
  • The Apopka, Florida, native became the first Boilermaker to eclipse the 100-yard receiving mark since Arhmad Branch in last season’s opening contest.
  • Waseem’s performance marked the first time a Boilermaker produced a 100-yard receiving game since All-American Charlie Jones accomplished the feat in 2022.

HOT OPENER

  • Friday night’s season opener was a scorcher, as the temperature reached 93 degrees at kickoff.
  • The 93-degree kickoff temperature made it Purdue’s warmest night game this century. 
  • Factoring in humidity, the RealFeel temperature cracked triple digits at 103 degrees.
