WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four players with Purdue ties ended NBA Summer League play over the weekend.
Braden Smith, Oscar Cluff, Fletcher Loyer and Trey Kaufman-Renn all played five games during their time in Las Vegas from July 9-19, showcasing their skills for teams in hopes of obtaining training camp invitations in September.
The Los Angeles Clippers, aided by Fletcher Loyer, and the Houston Rockets and Oscar Cluff, posted 3-2 records in their five-game stints. Cluff’s Rockets’ squad was a semifinalist for the NBA Summer League Championship.
The Pacers and Braden Smith and the Timberwolves and Trey Kaufman-Renn posted 2-3 records.
Braden Smith saw the most action on the floor, helping the Pacers to a pair of victories. He averaged 6.8 points, 7.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 26:45 minutes per game. He scored 16 points with five assists in a win over Philadelphia and averaged 8.7 assists per game over his last three outings, posting a 26-to-9 (2.89) assist-to-turnover ratio over the last three games.
Oscar Cluff had a strong summer for the Rockets, averaging 18:01 minutes per game and contributing 4.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 0.6 blocks per game. He led all Boilermakers in plus-minus with a +26 during his time on the floor.
Fletcher Loyer also had a strong summer averaging over 13 minutes per game, averaging 7.0 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists. He was 10-of-23 (.435) from the field and 4-of-13 (.308) from 3-point range. He scored 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting against Washington.
Lastly, Trey Kaufman-Renn overcame a freak mouth injury in the second game to average 6.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game, shooting 10-of-19 (.526) from the field. After scoring just two points in his first two games, Kaufman-Renn averaged 10.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over the final three games. Despite the Timberwolves’ 2-3 record, Kaufman-Renn posted a positive plus-minus ratio in every game.
