Season Recap: Divers Lead the Way as Boilers Finish 18th at NCAAs Again

Big Tens Scoring Recap
by Ben Turner

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – All-America honors for all four divers that qualified for the NCAA Championships and another top-20 national finish headlined the 2024-25 season for Purdue Women’s Swimming & Diving.

Sophie McAfee (3-meter) and Daryn Wright (platform) broke longstanding team records at the Purdue Invitational in November and went on to score on both 3-meter and the tower to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. They teamed with Avery Worobel (1-meter) and Jenna Sonnenberg (platform) to account for 53 team points at NCAAs, good for an 18th place national finish in the team rankings for the second year in a row.

The Boilermakers finished top 20 nationally in consecutive years for the first time ever.

Season Recaps: 2010 / 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021 / 2022 / 2023 / 2024

Wright was a full-fledged (top 8) All-American on 3-meter and platform, becoming Purdue’s fifth female diver to achieve the feat in the same year. She was one of only three nationally to accomplish the feat in 2025.

McAfee was a finalist on platform at NCAAs again and also earned honorable mention All-America accolades on 3-meter. She became the Boilermakers’ first female diver to be an All-American in multiple diving events at three consecutive NCAA Championships.

Sonnenberg closed out her career by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in all three events for the first time. McAfee added her name to the elite list of Boilermakers that have been four-year NCAAs qualifiers.

Team records were also set by Hannah Hill (50 freestyle), Abby Marcukaitis (200 backstroke) and Kathryn Ackerman (400 individual medley). Hill took down the 50 benchmark by .17 hundredths, eclipsing a record that had stood since the 2013 Big Ten Championships. Marcukaitis made a run at both backstroke records, eclipsing the 200 mark at the Big Ten Triple Duals hosted by Minnesota and again a few weeks later at the Big Ten Championships. As a graduate transfer swimming alongside her sister Grace, Ackerman bested the team in the record in the 400 IM by two seconds at the Purdue Invite. It was a mark that had stood since the 2016 Big Ten Championships.

Campbell Scofield became Purdue’s first freshman swimmer to qualify for an A final at Big Tens since 2015, earning a spot on the All-Freshman team as the top-finishing freshman in the event.

Sophomore Kate Mouser and freshman Adele Sands both scored in all three of their individual events. Since 2016, Mouser has joined Alex Clarke as Purdue’s only swimmers to accomplish that feat both of their underclassman seasons. Sands, Mouser and Clarke are now the only Purdue swimmers to be three-event scorers as freshmen in the top-24 format era.

Masy Folcik and Kathryn Ackerman closed out their careers as five-year scorers at Big Tens. Mahala Erlandson joined McAfee and Sonnenberg as four-year scorers at Big Tens. Sonnenberg scored in all three diving events for the second time in her career.

Wright finished top five in all three diving events at Big Tens, winning bronze on platform for the second year in a row and leading the way for Purdue by accounting for 78 team points. She’s now a perfect 9-for-9 in career top-10 finishes at Big Tens and was one of only two divers to be a championship finalist in all three events this year. Wright posted the second-highest point total by a Boilermaker since the top-24 scoring format went into effect; only Emily Bretscher (83) in 2020 accounted for more.

Worobel also finished top five on both springboards, winning silver on 3-meter to earn second-team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors. She became Purdue’s first freshman to win a medal in a springboard event since Casey Matthews in 2009. Matthews went on to become an NCAA champion (2013), Big Ten champion (2014) and Purdue Hall of Famer (2020).
