Big Tens Scoring Recap
Season Recaps: 2010 / 2011 / 2012 / 2013 / 2014 / 2015 / 2016 / 2017 / 2018
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Emily Meaney's silver medal on the tower at the NCAA Championships and the five program records established by her teammates highlighted the 2018-19 season for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
The Boilermakers had a program-record 31 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors for having cumulative grade-point averages of 3.0 and higher. Senior Alex Clarke's 3.89 GPA helped earn her a Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarship.
Senior Taite Kitchel closed out her distinguished career as a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier. She eclipsed the program record in the 100 butterfly at Big Tens and also helped Purdue post new benchmarks in both medley relays for the second year in a row. She was recognized as Purdue Athletics' female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, becoming the seventh member of swim-dive this decade to earn the distinguished honor.
Senior Jackie Smailis was part of four of the five program records set this season. She established new marks in both backstroke events and also swam the leadoff leg on both record-setting medley relays. The 200 back record had stood since 2010 as the longest-standing benchmark in the record book. Smailis also scored in all three of her individual events at Big Tens.
Meaney won bronze on the tower at Big Tens and then took silver in the same event at the national championship meet. It was the highest finished by a Purdue woman at the NCAA Championships since Casey Matthews won the 3-meter diving national title in 2013. Meaney was also Purdue's top individual scorer at Big Tens, scoring in all three diving events.
Emily Bretscher earned honorable mention All-American accolades on both 1-meter and platform at NCAAs, finishing as the runner-up in the consolation final of both events for a pair of top-10 national showings. She was also among the top five in both events at Big Tens. Purdue has had a women's diver earn All-America acclaim in 15 of the last 16 years.
The Boilermakers finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships and 26th at the NCAA Championships.
Morgan Meixner, Jinq En Phee and Maggie Merriman joined Bretscher, Kitchel and Meaney at NCAAs. Phee broke one minute yet again in the 100 breaststroke at the national championship meet. Merriman qualified for NCAAs as a freshman.
Tessa Wrightson (100 back) and Jade Knueppel (50 free) both established freshman records. Wrightson accomplished the feat at both the IU Invitational in November and Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance meet in March, moving into fifth place in program history.
Natalie Myers (200 back, 400 IM) and Maizie Seidl (500 free) also posted career-best times that ranked among the top five in program history. Myers joined Meaney and Smailis as Boilermakers to score in all three of their individual events at Big Tens.
Purdue bids adieu to another accomplished senior class that helped rewrite the program record book. Bretscher, Meaney, Merriman, Myers, Phee and Wrightson will headline the Boilermakers' returning letterwinners for the 2019-20 season.
