WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Athletics' academic excellence from the fall sports season featured 70 student-athletes earning Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
Football led the way with 32 Academic All-Big Ten honorees this fall. Cross Country produced 22 (15 women, 7 men), headlined by three of the four Boilermakers with flawless 4.0 grade-point averages in either their master's or bachelor's degree programs. Volleyball had eight honorees and Soccer featured seven.
Cross Country's Payne Turney, Alex Frey and Joel Gomez as well as Soccer's Lida Dodge received special recognition for their 4.0 cumulative GPAs. Gomez is a two-time Paralympian for Team USA.
During the 2023-24 school year, the Boilermakers had 228 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and 60 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be enrolled full-time at their university for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, announced in the summer, is based on a 3.7-plus yearly or cumulative GPA for sophomores and above.
Among the Boilermakers recognized is an elite group of 17 student-athletes to be honored by the conference for at least the third time. Of those 17, Cross Country's Caroline Jordan and Turney as well as Football's Ben Furtney, Gus Hartwig and Andrew Sowinski were all recognized for a fourth time. Turney, Furtney, Hartwig and Sowinski are all now in master's programs at Purdue.
Altogether, 27 of the 70 Boilermakers honored this month are now multi-year Academic All-Big Ten honorees.
The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 2,001 student-athletes as Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the fall sports season. That total includes 772 from football, 502 from soccer, 413 from cross country, 170 from volleyball and 144 from field hockey.
