THE NOTES TO KNOW
• After a defensive-minded 63-44 win over Austin Peay on Friday, Purdue faces a stiff challenge against Marquette in Tuesday's Gavitt Games.
• The Boilermakers are aiming for their second straight 3-0 start after last year's team opened the year 8-0 while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking in the AP poll in early December.
• However, Purdue has started 3-0 just one time in the last three seasons (2022). The 2021 team started 2-1, while the 2020 squad went 1-2.
• Purdue has won 16 straight non-conference games at Mackey Arena. The last non-conference home loss came on Nov. 9, 2019, against Texas (70-66). The head coach of that Texas squad was Marquette's current coach, Shaka Smart. Smart also handed the Boilermakers a setback at Texas in Dec. 2018, and in the 2011 NCAA Tournament as his VCU team made a run to the Final Four that season.
• The final demon to exercise is a loss to Marquette in the last meeting during the 2019 Gavitt Games, a 65-55 setback in Milwaukee.
• The Boilermakers have won nine straight games in the month of November, with its last loss coming Nov. 26, 2020, vs. Clemson (81-70). The average margin of victory in the nine games is 27.6 points per game with seven of the wins coming by at least 19 points.
• Purdue has held its opponents to 36 total points in the first half, while opponents have shot 16-of-57 (.281) from the field. Purdue has outscored its opponents 70-36 in the opening 20 minutes.
• Purdue's freshman class is averaging 24.5 points (33.3 percent) and 12.0 rebounds per game through the season's first two games.
• Purdue's bench is averaging 39.0 points per game, good for 34th nationally. Purdue has seven players averaging at least 5.0 points per game.
• On the national scene, Purdue ranks 7th in 3-point percentage defense (.163), 12th in rebound margin (+19.0), 15th in scoring defense (48.5),  24th in blocked shots (6.5), 28th in free throw percentage (.795) and 38th in field goal percentage defense (.336).
• Individually in the national rankings, Zach Edey is 1st in double-doubles (2) and offensive rebounds per game (7.0), 4th in rebounds per game (14.0) and 11th in blocks per game (3.5). Braden Smith is 23rd in steals per game (3.5) and Fletcher Loyer is 34th in assist / turnover ratio (6.00).
Zach Edey became the first Big Ten player since JaJuan Johnson in Feb. 2011, to have at least 12 points, 17 rebounds and 6 blocks in a game when he did so against Milwaukee. He then posted the Big Ten's first 30-10 game of the season in the win over Austin Peay.
• Purdue has won 40 straight games when scoring 80 or more points (last loss: Dec. 15, 2018, vs. Notre Dame, 88-80).
• Purdue is 139-15 when winning both the turnover and rebound battles. Purdue was +10 in turnovers and +18 in rebounding vs. Milwaukee.
Matt Painter needs 14 overall victories to become the fifth coach in Big Ten history with 400 victories while at a conference school (Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Gene Keady, Lou Henson).
• With the sellout against Austin Peay, Purdue has had a home sellout in 43 consecutive games. The last non-sellout came Jan. 3, 2019, vs. Iowa. Just two more games on the schedule have tickets remaining (New Orleans on Dec. 21; Florida A&M on Dec. 29).
• The Boilermakers own an 1,886 - 1,054 all-time record (.641), ranking tied for 11th with Arizona on the all-time NCAA basketball wins list. The 64.1 winning percentage is tied for 14th all-time.
• Purdue is in search of its 25th Big Ten Championship, having won two of the last six regular-season titles (2017, 2019). The Boilermakers are the all-time leader in Big Ten regular-season championships, two ahead of rival Indiana (22).
• Purdue has made seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the sixth-longest streak in the country. Purdue has accounted for four of the Big Ten's 11 Sweet 16 apperances since the 2016-17 season.
• Purdue has 10 players this season standing at least 6-6, the most in school history. Purdue's average height of its scholarship players is 6-7 1/4.
