WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's midweek finale Tuesday vs. Butler doubles as the return of the special commencement ceremony at Alexander Field as the program's eight spring graduates will receive their diplomas from university president Mitch Daniels at 5:30 p.m.
First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 6 p.m. It's the penultimate $3 midweek matchup of the season at Alexander, headlined by specially priced tickets, hot dogs and domestic draft beers. The Boilermakers' Thursday, May 19 series opener vs nationally ranked Maryland is also a $3 home game.
Purdue baseball has eight players earning degrees this week – Ricky Castro, Tanner Haston, Ryan Howe, Steve Ramirez, Calvin Schapira, Jackson Smeltz, Kyle Wade and Tyler Powers (master's). Haston, Howe, Smeltz and Wade are all graduating in four years. As transfers, Castro, Ramirez and Schapira are also earning their degrees in the same numbers of years they've been with the program. Meanwhile, Powers has earned his master's just one year after graduating with his bachelor's.
The commencement ceremony at Alexander will be streamed live on B1G+ at 5:30 p.m. prior to the game.
With the team heading to Chicagoland this weekend for key road series at Northwestern, those players won't have an opportunity to attend the traditional commencement ceremonies on campus. Commencement ceremonies were also held at Alexander in 2018 and 2021. President Daniels was on hand to hand out diplomas and congratulate the graduates in 2018, with the Boilermakers winning their 10th straight home game that night. Last May, university provost Jay Akridge led the commencement ceremony.
Purdue enters the week with 99 stolen bases as it continues to close in on the program record (106 in 2000). When the Boilermakers reach the century mark, it will mark only the second time in team history they've had 100 steals. Meanwhile, when Troy Viola was plunked in the sixth inning Sunday at Iowa, it marked the team's 100th hit by pitch of the season. Team hit by pitch totals are only available since 1982 and the 2011 team (108) is the only other one to reach the century mark. Purdue leads the Big Ten in both statistical categories.
CJ Valdez posted his second five-RBI game of the season in Saturday's win at Iowa, becoming just the fifth Boilermaker with two such games in the same season in the last 20 years. He also joined Kyle Johnson (2016) as the only players to do it in the BBCOR bat era (2011-present).
Evan Albrecht is also in select company with his 10 three-hit games this season. He's only the fourth Boilermaker in the last 20 years, and the first of the BBCOR bat era, to post a double-figure total of games with three or more hits.
