WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's longest road trip of the Big Ten Conference season brings the Boilermakers to Central Pennsylvania for the first time since March 2018, setting the stage for a Thursday-Friday-Saturday Easter Weekend series with Penn State.
First pitch at Medlar Field is set for 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday before a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday.
The coaching staffs mutually agreed to play Thursday-Friday-Saturday this weekend in order to be off on Easter. Nebraska's non-conference four-game set with BYU, which never plays on Sunday regardless, is the only other Big Ten series beginning on Thursday this weekend. The final weekend of the regular season (May 19-21) also traditionally features a Thursday-Friday-Saturday format.
With both teams moving from Saturday-Sunday series that featured doubleheaders to series that open on Thursdays, pitching probable are in flux. After he threw 121 pitches in his eight innings of one-hit ball Saturday, Purdue has opted to start Jackson Smeltz on Friday to give the lefty an extra day of rest. Troy Wansing would not start until Saturday at the earliest. Penn State is sticking with the TBA approach after Jaden Henline that it has utilized each of the first three weekends of Big Ten play. Lefty Kellan Tulio has started game 2 each of the last three weekends.
The Nittany Lions dropped their first three Big Ten series but managed to win a game each weekend while playing three of the top four teams in the current standings – Rutgers, Maryland and Northwestern – including the last two on the road.
Coincidentally, the Boilermakers are playing at Penn State as part of Easter Weekend for third time in the last 10 seasons. Purdue swept the series in Central Pennsylvania in both those visits (2013, 2018). Including four neutral-site games against Minnesota, the Nittany Lions have played seven games at Alexander Field since the last series at Medlar Field.
The Boilermakers have won seven of the last eight meetings in the series since 2018 and are 27-10 vs. Penn State since 2008. Excluding last year's split-site season series that featured two neutral-site matchups in East Lansing and a weather-suspended game that started Thursday and was finished Saturday in West Lafayette, five of the last six Purdue-PSU series dating back to 2013 – including all three at Medlar Field – have ended in sweeps.
Meanwhile, this weekend represents Purdue's only road series of the conference season that will be played on natural grass and dirt. Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue are the only four teams in the Big Ten that don't have artificial turf fields.

BOILERMAKERS SNAP HOME SKID IN BIG TEN RUBBER GAMES
• Overlooked in all the runs scored last week in the five games at Alexander Field – 59 by Purdue and 108 combined, with both totals being among the most ever in the BBCOR bat era or this century – was the fact that Purdue finally won a traditional rubber game in Big Ten play at Alexander Field. The Boilermakers held on to defeat Indiana 16-15 in the nightcap of a Sunday doubleheader that also served as the rubber game of the series.
• Excluding last season's unique circumstances with the split-site series vs. Penn State and the three-team pod at Alexander, Purdue had not won the rubber game of a three-game Big Ten series at home since the final day of the 2009 regular season vs. Illinois.
