WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling program had three individuals earn National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-America honors last week, marking the 15th national academic award winners under seventh-year head coach Tony Ersland. All three Boilermaker honorees take home the award for the second straight year, while senior Max Lyon became just the sixth three-time NWCA Scholar All-American in program history.

Junior Parker Filius and sophomore Thomas Penola join Lyon on the prestigious list, which features 191 individuals representing 59 institutions. The trio also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2021, in addition to placing at the 2021 Big Ten Championships and earning bids to the 2021 NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Filius and Penola join Lyon as 1-of-11 wrestlers in Purdue history to earn Scholar All-America multiple times.

Despite a 3.1983 grade point average nomination, the Boilermakers just missed out on top-30 DI Team Scholar All-America recognition for the third straight season. The team was just 0.0182 grade points from a spot on the list.
