WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball scored six times with two outs in the bottom of the third and racked up 19 strikeouts over 12 innings in a 10-2 exhibition game victory vs. Heartland College on Saturday at Alexander Field.
Tyler Brandenburg's double to the wall in left field cleared the bases after RBI singles by Cole McKenzie and Bryce Bonner extended the third inning. The Boilermakers drew four walks in the frame.
McKenzie's base hit up the middle plated Mike Bolton Jr. to open the scoring. Bonner delivered an opposite-field single into right field to plate a pair. The bases were also loaded when Brandenburg connected for the big blow of the game.
Bolton had an opportunity to lead off consecutive innings, succeeding in both opportunities. He walked, stole a base, advanced on a fly ball to center, and scored on McKenzie's hit in the bottom of the third. The following frame, he doubled down the left field line. The speedy outfielder thought about going for third, but pulled up at second instead. After a productive out from Skyler Hunter, Bolton scored on a sacrifice fly by McKenzie.
MOUND MEN FINISH STRONG

• Andrew Bohm struck out five of the eight batters he faced over 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief. He stranded a pair of inherited runners while finishing off the top of eighth with a punchout. He also finished the ninth and 10th innings with a K. Brooks struck out four of nine batters faced. Parker (3), Castro (3) and Smeltz (2) also registered multiple strikeouts.
DUCKS ON THE POND
• Highlighted by leadoff doubles by Hunter (1st) and Bolton (4th), Purdue had its leadoff man reach base safely in nine of the 12 innings.
• Zander Adams and McKenzie also had inning-opening hits. Zac Fascia, Miles Simington and Justin Fugitt joined Bolton as Boilermakers to draw leadoff walks. McKenzie's single in the 10th led to a run, with the senior scoring on freshman Jake Parr's RBI ground out.
The Boilermakers are back in action Friday when they open Homecoming Weekend on campus with a 5 p.m. ET exhibition game vs. Wabash Valley College.
