Boilers Earn 71 Winter Academic All-Big Ten Honors

The Purdue Athletics Department had 71 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors Wednesday.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue Athletics Department had 71 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors Wednesday as announced by the conference office, the Boilermakers' largest total since putting 71 on the team in the fall of 2014. To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must be members of a 2018-19 winter sport, be enrolled full-time for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

With 69 Academic All-Big Ten honorees in the fall the Boilermakers' 2018-19 total grows to 140, their largest number on record. Purdue women's swimming and diving nearly had its entire roster named to the list, putting a program-record 31 of its 38 student-athletes on the all-academic team, while men's swimming and diving added 17 student-athletes and wrestling put 13 on the squad, its highest total on record.

Ten of the 15 NCAA qualifiers for the swimming and diving programs are on the Academic All-Big Ten list, including conference champion Brandon Loschiavo and Purdue record-setters Joe Young and Trent Pellini on the men's side, and Big Ten medalist Emily Meaney and school-record holder Taite Kitchel for the women.

Five of the eight wresters heading to Pittsburgh for the NCAA Championships this week earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as well, headlined by junior Dylan Lydy who earned the No. 11 overall seed at 174 pounds. Redshirt seniors Jacob Aven and Ben Thornton earn their fourth career conference academic honors.

The Big Ten regular season champion men's basketball squad had four players on the list, including the conference's leading shot blocker in sophomore Matt Haarms, while junior Dominique Oden and sophomore Tamara Farquhar headlined a list of six women's basketball players on the team.
