DALLAS - Purdue divers Brandon Loschiavo, Steele Johnson and Emily Bretscher teamed up to win three medals at the USA Diving Senior National Championships contested over the last week on the campus of SMU.
Johnson and Loschiavo repeated as the national champion in synchronized 10-meter, competing unopposed this year. They clinched the USA's berth in the event at the FINA Diving World Cup next month in Wuhan, China.
Meanwhile, Purdue swimmers Marat Amaltdinov, Kaersten Meitz and Taite Kitchel were also in action this weekend, racing long course at USA Swimming's TYR Pro Swim Series event in Indianapolis. Amaltdinov (2:14.42) took sixth in the championship final of the 200-meter breaststroke. Meitz qualified for the B finals of the 200 (2:03.77) and 400-meter freestyle (4:13.25).
Individually, Loschiavo won silver on 10-meter and Brestscher won bronze on 1-meter. Johnson was also fourth on 3-meter and Morgan Meixner placed sixth on 1-meter. Bretscher was a finalist on 3-meter as well, finishing 12th. She and Meixner were both among the top three in the national qualifier to advance to the 40-diver field.
Loschiavo also qualified for the FINA World Cup with a runner-up finish on tower. He and Johnson will compete together in the synchronized event at the premier international meet for the second year in a row. They represented USA Diving at the 2017 FINA World Championships, making their international debut as a synchro team in the process.
The FINA Diving World Cup is set for June 5 to 10.
Johnson, who competed at the 2014 FINA World Cup in Shanghai, China, said, "I think I'm just excited to see the culture and the area. I've been to Shanghai, Shantou and Beijing, but I've never been to Guangzhou or Wuhan. I don't know what to expect, but I took Mandarin in high school. I'm really fascinated by the Chinese culture and we're close friends with the Chinese divers as well, so it should just be fun to be in their territory."
