WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermakers racked up 14 runs on 13 hits and five errors in a 14-1 run rule victory over IPFW on Wednesday.
Junior Paris Andrew went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Purdue bats. Freshman Maya Hughes, sophomore Kristen Hoppman and junior CJ Parsons added two hits apiece, while freshman Morgan Cavinder tallied her first hit of the season in the game.
Freshman Gina Snyder struck out five in the victory for the Boilermakers and senior Lexy Moore added one K in the final two innings. Sarah Lazarowich (1-13) was saddled with the loss for IPFW after tossing the first two and two thirds innings. Avery Nelson wrapped the game for the Mastodons.
IPFW scored first, plating a run on a hit in the opening stanza. A leadoff walk, sacrifice and illegal pitch put the runner at third, setting up an RBI single by Morghyn Neal.
The Boilers put up seven runs on five hits and three errors in the bottom of the inning. Hughes reached on a bunt single, went to second on a throwing error and third on a ground ball. She then slid around the tag at the plate on a fielder's choice play that put Burkhardt on. Freshman Kaylah Hampton walked and senior Alyssa Koorsen tallied an infield single to load the bases for Andrew, who delivered a two-RBI double down the right field line. Hoppman plated two more with a single to right field. She wound up at third on the play after a fielding error, and scored on a Parsons single. Parsons went to third on a wild pitch and ground out and scored on a fielding error by the third baseman. A fly out finally ended the inning with the Boilers ahead 7-1.
Purdue added a run on two hits in the second. Burkhardt singled and stole second before scoring on an RBI single to left by Andrew.
The Boilemakers boosted the lead to 14-1, plating six runs on five hits and two errors in the third. Singles by junior Sydney Pencek and Hughes, a fielder's choice play and a walk to Burkhardt filled the bases. Koorsen drew an RBI walk with two outs to drive in the first run of the inning. Andrew doubled to center field to score two more. A Hoppman single pushed Andrew and Koorsen home. Hoppman ended up at third on the play thanks to a throwing error by the left fielder. She then scored on a Parsons single. Parsons went to third on an error, but Nelson took over in the circle and forced a ground out to end the stanza.
The Mastodons got a leadoff single in the fourth, but the Boilermaker defense turned a double play to erase the hit.
The Boilers had runners at the corners in the fourth after freshman Stephanie Ramsey was hit by a pitch and stole second and Cavinder added a single to second base. A fly ball brought IPFW to the plate one last time.
The Mastodons went down in order on two ground outs and a strikeout to wrap up the game.
The Boilermakers (26-16) return to action at 5 p.m. Friday when they play host to Iowa in the first of a three-game weekend series. Friday is Salute to Service Day at the ballpark. All police, fire, military and hospital staff as well as boy scouts and girl scouts receive $1 admission.
