DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore August Kim shot a one-under, 71, to finish one-under, 215, and won a play-off to win her first collegiate tournament and lead the Purdue women's golf team to a second-place team showing at the Dallas Athletic Club/Southern Methodist University Invitational on Saturday. The Boilermakers posted the best team score in both the first and final rounds, shooting three-over, 291, on Saturday to finish 19-over, 883, for the tournament.
The Boilermakers were red hot out of the gate, making three birdies and an eagle from junior Anna Appert Lund to go out to a quick five-under start. Things went back-and-forth over the front nine as they struggled on the par-four fourth hole and par-three fifth, but got back to action after the turn, shooting a combined six-under on holes No. 10-13. Kim got as low as three-under, but made bogey on No. 15 and 18 to share the lead with Kansas' Yupaporn Kawinpakorn as play finished. The pair went to a playoff on holes No. 1 and 10, matching scores on the first hole before Kim's par on No. 10 sealed up her medalist honors.
Senior Aurora Kan finished fourth individually, shooting four-over, 76, on Saturday to post a score of one-over, 217, for the tournament. Freshman Marta Martin was just outside the top-20 at 23rd, posting a one-over, 73, on Saturday to shoot 10-over, 226, for the weekend, while Appert Lund and senior Johanna Tillström were both excellent on Saturday as well, shooting one-over, 73, and two-over, 74, respectively.
No. 14 Oklahoma State won the team title, getting some clutch birdies late to hold off the surging Boilermakers, and finishing 11-over, 875, for the tournament. Purdue topped a trio of higher-ranked teams in the final standings, besting No. 24 UC Davis, No. 27 Miami and No. 31 Iowa State. Kim topped 10 top-100 individuals on the weekend, becoming the first Boilermaker to win a tournament since Kan's medalist honors as the 2014 Purdue Rainy Day Shootout.
The Boilermakers are off next weekend, but return to action for the 2015 Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on April 24.
