WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue men's swimming closes out its fall schedule at the star-studded Arena/Minnesota Grand Prix where the Boilermakers will look to post their best times of the fall at the three-day, six-session meet.
Action is set for Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Preliminaries begin daily at 10 a.m. ET and finals are set for 7 p.m. ET.
The Boilermakers are traveling their full swimming roster to the USA Swimming-sponsored meet this season. The men's divers are competing at the Ohio State Invitational this weekend against the likes of Kentucky, Kenyon, Miami (Ohio), OSU, Wisconsin and Virginia. The Purdue women are also closing out their fall season in Columbus.
Head coach Dan Ross opted to take the Purdue men to the Minnesota Grand Prix for the second year in a row. As a part of the Arena Grand Prix Series that runs through June and also features multiple-day meets in Austin, Orlando, Mesa, Ariz., Charlotte and Santa Clara, Calif., numerous Olympic medalists will be competing in Minneapolis this weekend.
USA Swimming capped the meet at 600 competitors. Purdue alumni Danny Tucker, Wyatt Hodges and Carly Mercer are all entered as independent swimmers. Other big names in the world of USA Swimming like Katie Hoff, Elizabeth Beisel, Nathan Adrian, Tyler Clary and Connor Dwyer are also listed on the psych sheet.
While not an official team-scoring meet, Purdue will be competing primarily against the University of Minnesota. The Gophers are ranked 21st in the latest CSCAA Top 25 poll. The Boilermakers were the first team among those receiving votes in the same poll.
Filip Bujoczek broke Purdue's 500 freestyle freshman record at the Minnesota Grand Prix last season and went on to win Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for the second week in a row. He was the Boilers' top finisher in the 100, 200 and 500 free in Minneapolis a year ago and was also part of the team's top quartets in all three relay events.
On the opening night of the Minnesota Grand Prix last year, Guillermo Blanco and Lyam Dias each posted the top college time in the nation at that point in the season in the A final of the 400 IM and 100 breast, respectively. Blanco finished the weekend as a four-time A final qualifier (200 and 400 IM, 100 and 200 back) and Dias advanced to the A final of both breaststroke events.
The top 32 swimmers from preliminaries (except the 1650 free) will advance to finals. Eight swimmers will qualify for an A, B, C and D heat in the finals. In the finals, the B heat will swim first, followed by the A heat. After all these heats are completed, the D heat will be contested, followed by the C heat. All but the fastest two seeded heats of relays will be contested in the preliminary sessions.
The Boilermakers will be competing in the 400 medley and 800 free relays for the first time this season. The distance specialists will go the full mile on Saturday for the first time in 2014-15 as well.
