1964-66
Bob Griese was an All-American quarterback in 1965 and 1966. He also served as the Boilermakers' kicker and punter.
Griese left Purdue as the career leader in passing attempts (627), completions (358) and yards (4,541), and was second with 28 touchdowns. He also was tops with 4,983 yards of total offense and 191 points scored.
As a senior in 1966, Griese finished as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy (to Florida quarterback Steve Spurrier), received the Sammy Baugh Award as the nation's most outstanding passer and was named the Big Ten Most Valuable Player.
Griese completed 10 of 18 passes for 139 yards and kicked two extra points in the Boilermakers' 14-13 win over USC in the 1967 Rose Bowl.
The Boilermakers posted a combined 22-7-1 record (.750 winning percentage) during Griese's career.
Through the 2015 season, Griese ranks 10th in Purdue history in passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and total offense. He is 11th in completion percentage (.571) and 13th in passing efficiency (123.4). In addition, Griese ranks fifth in field goal percentage (.667) and tied for 17th in field goals made (10).
Griese was selected by the Miami Dolphins with the fourth-overall pick in the 1967 National Football League Draft and enjoyed a stellar 14-year professional career. He led the Dolphins to three consecutive Super Bowls (VI, VII and VIII), winning Super Bowl VII over the Washington Redskins 14-7 and Super Bowl VIII over the Minnesota Vikings 24-7. Griese made eight appearances in the Pro Bowl, and in 1982 his No. 12 jersey was the first Dolphin number to be retired.
A popular football television analyst for ABC and ESPN following his playing days, Griese is one of only two Boilermaker alums to be a member of the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics, College Football and Pro Football halls of fame (also Rod Woodson). He also is in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. In 1987, Griese was voted the All-Time Quarterback for the first 100 years of Purdue football.
