TOLEDO, Ohio – The Purdue men’s golf team rode the play of its youngest golfers and moved into 10th place after the final round of the Inverness Intercollegiate held at the renowned Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The Boilermakers only rose one spot in the overall standings, but turned in the second-lowest round of the day to finish tied for 10th out of 18 teams at one of college golf’s most-elite fields.
Purdue shot a 54-hole total of 24-over par 876 (293-299-284) to tie with No. 16-ranked Oklahoma in 10th place. No. 2 Auburn won the tournament at 11-over par 863. The Boilermakers finished just four shots out of sixth and defeated national powers LSU, Clemson, Wake Forest, Ole Miss and Virginia.
The tournament featured nine of the nation’s top-34 teams in the Golf Coaches Association of America preseason poll.
Leading the Boilermakers was sophomore Will Harvey, who posted his second straight top-20 finish with a T-19 showing at 6-over par 219 (73-77-69). He rose 36 spots after the second round with today’s 69, his first round in the 60s this season. He is the only Boilermaker to place in the top 20 of both tournaments so far this year.
Senior Sam Easterbrook also tied for 19th at 6-over par with rounds of 70-72-77. Easterbrook recorded his 21st top-20 finish, coming in just his 39th career event. His 21 top-20 showings are tied for the seventh most in Purdue history.
Freshman Micah Sheffer continued his strong early-season play, with a T-26 finish at 7-over par 220 (75-75-70). He was one of 15 rounds of 70 or lower in today’s final round, posting his third round of even-par or better already this season.
Jenson Forrester tied for 52nd at 10-over par 223 (75-77-71) and Supapon Amornchaichan was tied for 59th at 11-over par 224 (75-75-74).
Purdue will be off until the Fighting Irish Classic at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana, on Oct. 4 and 5.
