TOLEDO, Ohio – The Purdue men’s golf team is in the hunt after day one of the Inverness Intercollegiate held at the renowned Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The Boilermakers totaled a first-round score of 9-over par 293 to sit 10 shots behind leader Iowa (-1), but just two shots out of second place behind Toledo, Tennessee and Ohio State (+7). The teams that went off first had a significant advantage as Iowa and Toledo were the first groups to go off on Sunday morning.
Purdue is in fifth place, ahead of defending National Champion Auburn (+10), Texas Tech (+11), Vanderbilt (+14), Wake Forest, Ole Miss and Clemson (+15), Oklahoma (+16), Virginia (+18) and LSU (+21). All of those teams are ranked in the top 30 nationally.
Purdue managed just six birdies in round one, but led the field with 68 pars.
Sam Easterbrook, playing in his first tournament of the season after representing Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup last week, led Purdue in round one with a 1-under par 70, good for third place after 18 holes. It was Easterbrook’s 60th career round of par or better.
Sophomore Will Harvey is tied for 18th with a 2-over par 73, while Supapon Amornchaichan, Jenson Forrester and Micah Sheffer are tied for 37th at 4-over par 75.
Purdue will tee off round two from 11:20 a.m. to Noon ET off hole 1, while paired with Auburn and Ohio State.
