Gossett Twirls 1-Hitter, Boilers Defeat Iowa 6-1

Purdue (33-19, 10-13 Big Ten) bounced back in dominant fashion on Saturday, defeating Iowa 6-1.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Purdue (33-19, 10-13 Big Ten) bounced back in dominant fashion on Saturday, defeating Iowa 6-1. The Boilers earn their first 33 win season since 2019, and clinch a spot in the Big Ten Tournament for the third-straight season.

The Boilermakers tallied 11 hits and scored in five of seven innings, while Julia Gossett limited the Hawkeyes to just one hit in the contest. 

Haley Painter picked up her 48th career-home run, 12th this year, while Moriah Polar earned her 97th hit this year, tying her for third for single-season hits in the Big Ten record book.

Offensive Highlights:

Purdue struck first in the opening inning, manufacturing a run on an RBI walk from Ansley Armstrong after Moriah Polar and Haley Painter reached and advanced into scoring position.

The Boilermakers added to their lead in the second when Kylie Franks tripled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Ashlynn Campbell to make it 2-0.

In the third, Painter continued her strong weekend with a solo home run before Purdue tacked on another run via a sacrifice fly from Maura Condon, extending the lead to 4-0. Painter hit her 48th career home run, and was 5-for-5 between game one and two at that point.

Purdue continued to apply pressure offensively, adding a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Franks and another in the sixth when Anna Moore delivered an RBI double to score Polar.

Iowa’s lone run came in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but Gossett and the Purdue defense closed the door from there, retiring the final four batters to secure the win.

Gossett was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game one-hitter while striking out four batters. The lone hit for Iowa did not come until the fifth inning.

Purdue and Iowa will face tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. est for the rubber match.
