KENOSHA, Wis. — While Purdue’s starting lineup was busy competing in Las Vegas, six Boilermakers were wrestling in the Jim Koch Wisconsin Open on Saturday. Five of them earned placement among their weight classes, including three runner-up finishes.
Jacob Macatangay (125 lbs) went 3-1, dominating his way to the finals with a first-round pin, a quarterfinal 13-2 major decision and a semifinal pin. His 13-2 major was over the No. 1 seed, Iowa freshman Joey Cruz. Macatangay went on to drop a 4-2 decision to Keyan Hernandez (Iowa) in the finals.
After taking second place in November’s Tiger Style Invite, 149-pounder Cole Solomey continued to make the most of his opportunities with another runner-up finish on Saturday. He dominated his first three matches by a score of 31-6, including a 21-5 technical fall, before falling to Jahel Spuhler (Wisconsin-Parkside) in the finals.
Isaac Ruble picked up two more bonus point wins on his way to a 2-1 second-place ending. He earned a pin (2:15) and an 11-0 major, and ultimately earned his second career college tournament placement.
Wyatt Krejsa led the team in wins, taking his first two by pin and by major decision, and ultimately winning two more in consolation to finish third place. The redshirt freshman went 4-1.
Isaiah Quintero also won his first two to advance to the semifinals, but lost momentum after that and ultimately medically forfeited his fifth-place match to end up sixth.
Ethan Popp did not place but earned his first win via 6-5 decision over Connor Smith.
