WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Baseball's midweek opener doubles as the first of 32 games to be played inside the state of Indiana as the Boilermakers visit Terre Haute on Tuesday for the front end of the annual home-and-home series with Indiana State.
First pitch at Bob Warn Field has been moved up slightly to 3:30 p.m. due to rain in the forecast for Tuesday night.
Along with their 27-game home schedule, which opens March 12 at Alexander Field, the Boilermakers also visit Bloomington (May 9-11) and Muncie (May 13) for in-state games this season. Starting Tuesday, they have a midweek game scheduled for every week through the visit to Muncie during the final week of the regular season. Indiana State and Ball State are the home-and-home opponents during the 11-game midweek slate. The Sycamores visit West Lafayette on April 8.
The Purdue-Indiana State series dates back to 1902 and Tuesday's game will mark the earliest in the season the teams have ever played. A March 13 matchup in 2019 – which was also the Boilermakers' midweek opener – was previously the earliest date on the calendar.
ACTIVE STREAKS
• Logan Sutter – 14-game on-base (since May 21, 2024), 4-game RBI; on-base safely multiple times in all 12 games
• Ty Gill – 13-game on-base (since May 17, 2024)
• Albert Choi – 12-game on-base (as a Boilermaker)
• Brandon Anderson – 11-game on-base, 10-game hit, 10-game run scored
• Avery Moore – 9-game on-base
• Gavin Beuter – 9 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings
Purdue went 5-4 in midweek action last season, with two of the losses coming at the hands of an Indiana State team that went 44-15 while qualifying for its fourth NCAA Regional since 2019. Both games were not decided until the eighth inning.
In Terre Haute, the Sycamores broke a 7-7 tie with a run in the bottom of the eighth and then turned a game-ending 6-4-3 double play in the ninth after Purdue loaded the bases with no outs. The rematch two weeks later in West Lafayette was tied 2-2 entering the eighth inning. ISU scored seven times over the final two frames to pull out a 9-3 victory.
Indiana State hired longtime Southern Indiana coach Tracy Archuleta after Mitch Hannahs left for South Florida over the summer. Archuleta led USI to NCAA Division II national titles in 2010 and 2014 as well as through the transition to the Division I level as the Screaming Eagles joined the Ohio Valley Conference for the 2022-23 school year.
Much of Indiana State's roster has turned over from its recent success of the last two years that saw the Sycamores win consecutive Missouri Valley Conference titles and an NCAA Regional (as the host) in 2023. Meanwhile, Camden Gasser, Keenan Spence and Cole Van Assen are the only active Boilermakers that started both games against ISU a year ago. Veteran pitchers Avery Cook and Carter Doorn did take the mound in relief in both games.
Spence connected for a pair of doubles in Terre Haute last season. Logan Sutter's RBI double opened the scoring in the third inning at Bob Warn Field. A year later as seniors, four of Spence's last six hits dating back to Feb. 22 have been doubles. Sutter is off to a monster start, ranking fourth nationally with 24 RBI while also being top 10 nationally in batting average, on-base and slugging via a gaudy .548/.655/1.024 slash line. Sutter has reached base safely multiple times in each of Purdue's first 12 games.
