WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A doubleheader for Monday Night Football concluded the third week of the 2024 NFL season, and eight Boilermakers saw action around the league.
Aidan O'Connell took his first snaps of 2024, entering the game for the Las Vegas Raiders in the fourth quarter against the Carolina Panthers. With the Raiders down 36-15 late in the game, head coach Antonio Pierce turned back to O'Connell, who started 10 games last year as a rookie when he completed 213 of 343 passes (62.1%) for 2,218 yards and 12 touchdowns.
O'Connell made the most of his opportunity in limited action on Sunday as he engineered a touchdown drive, completing 9 of 12 passes for 84 yards and a score, good for a 120.8 passer rating.
George Karlaftis registered two tackles (one solo), including a tackle-for-loss in a Kansas City Chiefs win at the Atlanta Falcons. Karlaftis, the third-year pro out of Purdue, ranks second on the team with 12 pressures through Week 3.
In his third career game, rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. had his most impactful day yet for the New York Giants. He posted five carries for 23 yards, a 4.6-yard average, and caught two passes for 17 yards in a win at the Cleveland Browns.
Payne Durham of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers posted his first reception of the season, an eight-yard gain against the Denver Broncos. Sanoussi Kane continues to make his presence known on special teams for the Baltimore Ravens, downing a punt at the 9-yard line in the road win against the Dallas Cowboys. Charlie Jones of the Cincinnati Bengals also saw action in the Monday Night Football game against the Washington Commanders.
Another unfortunate string of injuries hit the Pro Boilers this week, first with news last Tuesday of New England Patriots captain Ja'Whaun Bentley tearing his pectoral. He was subsequently placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Detroit Lions standout Derrick Barnes logged one tackle at the Arizona Cardinals before exiting the game with a knee injury. He is also expected to miss significant time per Lions coach Dan Campbell. Cory Trice Jr. of the Pittsburgh Steelers played three snaps in the win against the Los Angeles Chargers before going down with a hamstring injury.
Former Boilermakers who saw game action went a combined 5-3 in Week 3.
