WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Football completed its second day of fall camp on Thursday morning (Aug. 1), officially 30 days away from the start of the new season and the matchup with Indiana State in Ross-Ade Stadium.
Offensive coordinator Graham Harrell spoke to the media for the first time since spring ball. He was joined by quarterbacks Hudson Card and Ryan Browne.
Harrell and Card both enter their second season as Boilermakers working to improve upon what was a potent and balanced attack in 2023. Harrell's offense led the Big Ten in rushing in conference games (184.6 ypg) while producing the program's most rushing yards since 2012.
"I think he feels way more comfortable and confident," Harrell said of Card. "That's important. He does a really good job, understanding what we're trying to do on each play. I think he sees it through a similar lens as the coaching staff."
Card got it done both through the air and on the ground last year, earning an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention distinction. He threw for 2,387 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 203 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Finishing the season ranked third in the conference in passing yards (217.0 yards per game) and completions (19.6 completions per game), Card built positive momentum for himself and the rest of the unit heading into the 2024 season.
"Obviously it was my first season as a full-time starter, so that was a big step," said Card. "I learned a whole lot last year, and the growth from year one to year two can really help out this team a lot. In the Big Ten you're playing the best teams in the country every week. There are no games that are going to be easy. We all know that, and I think that's a challenge that we all embrace."
The redshirt freshman Browne is part of a trio of guys along with Marcos Davila and Bennett Meredith competing for the backup spot over the next month of camp. The Michigan native appeared in one game last season against Northwestern when Card was injured, going 12-of-16 for 104 yards.
"We're all really close and we're all there for each other," said Browne. "It's all about becoming better and by doing that we help each other out."
The Boilermakers wrap up the first week of practice on Friday (Aug. 2).
