WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In weekend two, the Purdue softball team (3-2) is off to compete in the Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF. The Boilermakers will face four opponents over five games in Tampa, Florida, facing UIC, Boston College, Hofstra and host USF.
Both games at USF will be streamed on ESPN+.
SETTING THE TONE
- In Purdue's season-opener, junior lefty Kendall Klochack nearly produced a perfect game, allowing just one hit in the seventh inning vs. Murray State (W, 3-0).
- On opening day, Purdue registered 11 runs.
- Eight of Purdue's 11 hits came at the bats of underclassmen.
ALL ABOUT SPEED
- Purdue went 12-13 on stolen bases, ranking second in the Big Ten and 17th in the nation.
- The Boilermakers' posted four stolen bases in each of the first two games of the season, a feat that has been accomplished just one other time in the last six years.
MAKING A STATEMENT: KHLOE BANKS
- The sophomore led the team in nearly every offensive category over opening weekend.
- She ranks T-#1 in stolen bases (4), #7 in the Big Ten in batting avg. (.583), #8 in runs scored (6) and #9 in on-base % (.643).
- The outfielder posted a career-high three runs on three hits and three stolen bases vs. South Dakota (2/9).
A NEAR-PERFECT GAME: KLOCHACK
- Despite the season-opener being her first complete-game and eighth start of her collegiate career, Klochack was one batter away from becoming the first pitcher since 2016 to toss a perfect game. She allowed one hit in the top of the seventh vs. Murray State.
- She is the first pitcher since 2021 to throw a one-hitter complete-game.
- Klochack sent five of her first nine batters faced to the dugout.
- Tied a career-high six strikeouts.
COMING UP BIG IN CLUTCH MOMENTS
- Kiersen George entered the game vs. South Dakota as a pinch hitter in the 5th inning (2 Outs). She produced an RBI triple - the only triple by the Boilermakers over the weekend - and was her first appearance of the 2024 season. The hit gave Purdue the 4-1 lead.
