Boilermakers Surge in Round 2 at Purdue Fall Invitational

Purdue turned it on in the afternoon's second round to put itself in contention at the Purdue Fall Invitational.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. After a slow start in the morning round, the Purdue men's golf team turned it on in the afternoon's second round to put itself in contention at the Purdue Fall Invitational at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course.
 
The Boilermakers totaled a 36-hole tally of 1-under par 567 after rounds of 291-276, to sit just seven shots behind the pace set by both Illinois State and Northern Illinois. Nebraska is in third at 2-under par 566, while Central Arkansas and VCU also shot scores of 1-under par 567. No. 9-ranked Illinois is seventh at 1-over par 569, while Ball State is eighth at 3-over par 571.
 
The Boilermakers were ninth after round one after managing just eight birdies and an eagle in their opening 18 holes. However, round two was a different story as Purdue recorded 18 birdies en route to a 276 – tied for the 17th-lowest round in Purdue history.
 
Leading the surge was freshman Sam Easterbrook. After an opening round 73, Easterbrook fired a career-best 67 in the second round to move up 28 spots into T-8th after 36 holes. His total of 2-under par 140 is seven shots off the lead.
 
Herman Sekne (71-70) and Peyton Snoeberger (72-69) are tied for 15th at 1-under par. In 13 rounds this year, Sekne has been even- or under-par in nine of them.
 
Kent Hsiao is tied for 37th at 3-over par 145 (75-70), while Nels Surtani is tied for 66th at 8-over par 150 (75-75).
 
Playing as individuals, Justin Sun is tied for 27th at 1-over par 143 (70-73), and Luke Prall (82-71=153) and Nick Dentino (73-80=153) are tied for 76th at 11-over par.
 
Purdue will be paired with VCU, Illinois and Ball State in Tuesday's final round, beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The Boilermakers will tee off from holes 5 through 8.
