VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Purdue cross country team opened the 2023 season with a win and a runner-up finish at the Winrow Valparaiso Open on Friday evening in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The men were crowned team champions on the 6k course and the women were second overall in the 5k race. Sophomore Douglas Buckeridge finished fifth overall to pace the men and freshman Elise Peckinpaugh placed sixth overall to lead the women.
The men earned 45 points to best Notre Dame's 54 points. Goshen College had 57 points to finish third. In the women's competition, the Boilermakers were second with 45 points, behind Notre Dame with 36 points. Western Michigan was third with 68 points. The field also included host-Valparaiso and Grace College.
Peckinpaugh and Buckeridge were two of eight Boilermakers that made their Purdue debuts on Friday at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. The Old Gold and Black were represented by fifteen runners at the season-opening meet, eight women and seven men.
Buckeridge finished in 18:15.6 to place fifth overall, as he was just more than one second ahead of the sixth-place finisher on the 6k course. Sophomore Kiefer Bell was ninth in 18:24.0 to lead three consecutive Purdue finishers. Junior Brady Yoder was 10th in 18:26.6 and grad student Nathaniel Getachew was 11th in 18:28.3.
Senior Geno Christofanelli came in 15th in 18:39.0, followed by freshman Quintin Lowe (20th, 19:05.0) and freshman Jaryn Weinel (24th, 19:13.5).
Peckinpaugh crossed the finish line with a 5k time of 18:24.3. Just behind her in eighth was fellow freshman Paige Hazelrigg, who earned a time of 18:29.5. Junior Jaelyn Burgos was 11th in 18:43.1, followed by grad student Meredith Bloss in 14th thanks to a time of 18:53.2.
Freshman Sofia Munoz clocked in at 19:08.7 to place 21st, followed by sophomore Caitlin Williams (36th, 19:52.2), sophomore Olivia Phillips (48th, 20:48.2) and junior Brenna Shaw (52nd, 21:20.8).
Up next, the campaign continues in two weeks when the Boilermakers travel to the John McNichols Invitational on September 16.
