WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – With Sam Bennett on the springboards and Sophie McAfee on the tower, Purdue divers are set to represent the United States in each of the individual events at the World University Games this week in Chengdu, China.

Bennett is entered in the men's 1-meter and 3-meter events while McAfee is among the competitors in the women's 10-meter. For the Boilermakers, they're both two-time NCAA Championships qualifiers entering their junior seasons this fall.

Traditionally a biennial event, the summer World University Games have not been held since Italy hosted in July 2019. Chengdu was originally slated to host in the summer of 2021 but the COVID-19 pandemic led to multiple postponements. The Universiade showcase was moved back to China in part due to Russian's invasion of Ukraine after the city of Yekaterinburg was originally selected as the host of the 2023 event.

Purdue swimming & diving has had a student-athlete complete at every summer World University Games since 2005. Divers Emily Bretscher, Emily Meaney, Greg Duncan as well as swimmer Kaersten Meitz all competed in Italy in 2019. Meitz won medals at the World University Games in 2017 and 2019, including a pair of golds in 2019. Meaney was also a medalist in 2017.
