CORAL GABLES, Fla., and OXFORD, Ohio –The outdoor season begins this weekend for the Purdue track & field team at a pair of meets from March 17-18, the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida, and the Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio.

CORAL GABLES, Fla., and OXFORD, Ohio –The outdoor season begins this weekend for the Purdue track & field team at a pair of meets from March 17-18, the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida, and the Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio.
 
Purdue's sprinters, jumpers and throwers conclude a week-long training trip in South Florida at the Hurricane Invitational. Action begins on Friday, March 17, at noon ET, with the hammer throw, discus and pole vault. On Saturday, field events commence at 11 a.m. and running events start at 1 p.m. The meet will conclude with the 4x400 relay at 3:50 p.m.
 
Meanwhile, the Boilermaker distance squad makes the short trip east to the Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio. Purdue will race in the 1,500-meter at noon and the 800m at 2:35 p.m.

Thirty-two Boilermakers, 18 men and 14 women, will compete at the two-day Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami (Florida). Along with the host-Hurricanes, the field will include Iowa, LSU and Mississippi State. Seven distance runners will make the short trip east to the Blizzard Buster. Miami (Ohio) will host the event.
 
LAST TIME OUT: NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
A week ago on March 10, fifth-year Johnny Vanos finished 11th overall in the weight throw at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Competing at his first NCAA Championships, Vanos earned Second Team All-America accolades thanks to a throw of 21.88 meters.

PURDUE'S LAST VISIT TO MIAMI
Purdue also began the 2022 outdoor season at both the Hurricane Invite and Blizzard Buster, with seven victories and seven top-10 marks in school history from March 18-19, 2022. The Boilermakers added 11 second place finishes and four third-place showings and totaled 14 personal-best marks.
 
Five of Purdue's seven top-10 marks came with a win or a runner-up finish. Then-sophomore Saran Kouyeth earned a win with a top-10 time in school history, while then-sophomores Kerris Roberts and Safin Wills and freshman Rieko Wilford finished in second place in their events with top-10 marks.

A LOOK BACK AT THE 2022 OUTDOOR SEASON
The 2022 outdoor season featured nine NCAA Championship entries, four Big Ten medals and 40 top-10 marks in school history. Wills won the Big Ten triple jump title with a championship-record jump, and he earned two of Purdue's 18 All-America accolades with a 15th-place finish in the triple jump and a 20th-place showing in the long jump at the NCAA Championships.
 
The Boilermakers' nine NCAA entries were their most since 2018 and tied for sixth-most among Big Ten programs, and the men's five entries were the most since 2019 and tied for fourth-most in the Big Ten. Additionally, the four women's entries were the squad's most since 2018 and then-sophomore K'Ja Talley was the first Purdue woman to run in an individual NCAA event, the 400m hurdles, since 2018.
 
NEXT UP: ON TO RALEIGH
Next weekend, Purdue's distance runners will race at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina. The meet, hosted by NC State, is set for March 23-25.
