THE NOTES TO KNOW
• Purdue returns to the Pacific Northwest for the first time since March 2010 when it travels to Portland for the elite Phil Knight Legacy. Purdue played in the 2009 (Portland) and 2010 (Spokane) NCAA Tournaments in the Northwest, advancing to the Sweet 16 in both seasons.
• Purdue will face its second straight top-70 (KenPom) ranked team after beating Marquette 75-70 on Nov. 15. The Boilermakers current seven-game stretch is West Virginia, two more games in Portland, a quick turnaround to face Florida State in Tallahassee, and then Minnesota and Nebraska in its first two Big Ten games with Hofstra sandwiched between those two Big Ten games.
• The Boilermakers are aiming for their second straight 4-0 start after last year's team opened the year 8-0 while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking in the AP poll in early December. The last time Purdue started 4-0 in back-to-back seasons was in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
• Purdue is looking for its second straight tournament title after winning the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic last November with victories over North Carolina and Villanova. Purdue is 22-6 in FeastWeek tournaments since the 2014-15 season.
• Purdue has entered the AP Top 25 poll this week, coming in at No. 24. The Boilermakers have been ranked in at least one AP Top 25 poll in eight straight years, the longest streak in school history (previous long streak was four years twice) and the 10th-longest streak in America.
• The Boilermakers have won 10 straight games in the month of November, with its last loss coming Nov. 26, 2020, vs. Clemson (81-70). The average margin of victory in the nine games is 25.3 points per game with seven of the wins coming by at least 19 points.
• Purdue has also won 16 straight regular-season, non-conference games, dating to a Dec. 8, 2020, setback at Miami, Fla. (58-54).
• Purdue's freshman class is averaging 26.7 points (36.0 percent of scoring) and 10.3 rebounds per game through the first two games.
• On the national scene, Purdue ranks 17th in 3-point percentage defense (.231), 19th in rebound margin (+11.3), 19th in blocked shots (6.0), 21st in field goal percentage defense (.351), 26th in scoring defense (55.7) and 37th in fewest turnovers per game (10.3).
Braden Smith was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week after scoring 20 points with three assists and two rebounds vs. Marquette.
• Individually in the national rankings, Zach Edey is first in offensive rebounds per game (6.0), 2nd in double-doubles (3), 3rd in rebounds per game (13.7), 8th in blocks per game (3.3), 33rd in points per game (20.7) and 41st in field goal percentage (.649).
• Zach Edey is one of two players nationally to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. He is the only one to add three blocks per game.
• Purdue has won 40 straight games when scoring 80 or more points (last loss: Dec. 15, 2018, vs. Notre Dame, 88-80).
• Purdue is 139-15 when winning both the turnover and rebound battles. Purdue was +10 in turnovers and +18 in rebounding vs. Milwaukee.
Matt Painter needs 13 overall victories to become the fifth coach in Big Ten history with 400 victories while at a conference school (Bob Knight, Tom Izzo, Gene Keady, Lou Henson).
• With the sellout against Marquette, Purdue has had a home sellout in 44 consecutive games. The last non-sellout came Jan. 3, 2019, vs. Iowa. Just two more games on the schedule have tickets remaining (New Orleans on Dec. 21; Florida A&M on Dec. 29).
• The Boilermakers own an 1,887 - 1,054 all-time record (.642), ranking tied for 11th with Arizona on the all-time NCAA basketball wins list. The 64.1 winning percentage is tied for 14th all-time.
• Purdue is in search of its 25th Big Ten Championship, having won two of the last six regular-season titles (2017, 2019). The Boilermakers are the all-time leader in Big Ten regular-season championships, two ahead of rival Indiana (22).
• Purdue has made seven straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the sixth-longest streak in the country. Purdue has accounted for four of the Big Ten's 11 Sweet 16 apperances since the 2016-17 season.
• Purdue has 10 players this season standing at least 6-6, the most in school history. Purdue's average height of its scholarship players is 6-7 1/4.
