CHESTERTON, Ind. – Purdue's strong summer on the links continued this week as rising junior Nels Surtani won the Northern Amateur held at Sand Creek Country Club in Chesterton, Indiana.

Surtani led from start to finish, totaling a 36-hole total of 6-under par 210 (68-72-70) on the par-72 layout. Surtani defeated Ohio State's JonErik Alford and Indiana's Mitch Davis by three shots to add to Purdue's impressive haul this summer.

With Surtani's win, current Boilermakers have now won the Northern Amateur, the Indiana Amateur (Luke Prall) and the Sizzler Amateur (Kent Hsiao). Teammates Herman Sekne, Andrew Farraye and Benjamin Cai all qualified out of local qualifying into regional qualifying for the U.S. Open, and Peyton Snoeberger has qualified for the U.S. Amateur.

Surtani led by two shots after Wednesday's opening 18 holes, firing a 4-under par 68 to hold the advantage. He would shoot an even-par 72 on Thursday to enter today's final round in a tie with Davis at 4-under par. Through nine holes on Friday, the two remained tied at 5-under par, before Surtani played his back nine in 1-under par while Davis played it in 2-over par.

Davis would take a one-shot lead with a birdie on 10, moving him to 6-under par, but a David double-bogey on 12 dropped him one off the pace. Surtani then went up three shots with just five holes to play with a birdie on 13, while Davis bogeyed. Surtani would par the remaining five holes for his first amateur victory.
