WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For just the fourth time in program history, and the third time in the last four seasons, the Purdue wrestling team received National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-America team honors, ranking 25th in the country with a 3.367 grade point average. In addition, the Boilermakers tied a program record with five individual NWCA Scholar All-Americans, matching the previous mark set in 2019.
In a record-setting year for college wrestling GPA's, the Boilermakers logged a top-25 mark for the second time, following an 18th-place showing in 2019. Purdue is the highest-ranked Big Ten team in this year's top-30, and one of only three conference programs to earn a spot on the list, leading Northwestern and Michigan.
Purdue's five individual Scholar All-America were seniors Max Lyon, Parker Filius and Michael Woulfe, junior Thomas Penola and freshman Matt Ramos. Lyon is the second wrestler in Purdue history to become a four-time Scholar All-American, joining 2012 graduate A.J. Kissel, while Filius and Penola are the seventh and eighth wrestlers at Purdue to become three-time award winners.
Ramos is the third individual in program history to earn NWCA academic honors as a freshman, following Kissel and Cashé Quiroga.
Purdue head coach Tony Ersland has now accounted for 20 of the Boilermakers' 44 NWCA Scholar All-America award winners in program history, and three of the four team honors.
