WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball's busy April – featuring 20 games in 30 days – continues as the Boilermakers host Northern Illinois and Indiana State for midweek action to begin a six-game homestand at Alexander Field.
First Pitch is set for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday vs. NIU and Wednesday vs. ISU. Indiana and Purdue Fort Wayne also visit Alexander Field during the six-game homestand. Starting next week, midweek dates plus Friday and Saturday home games move to 6 p.m.
The Huskies won Monday at home vs. Miami (Ohio) to split a four-game Mid-American Conference series. They're slated to play consecutively on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday for the second week in a row.
The Sycamores won Sunday's rubber game with common opponent Illinois State to open Missouri Valley Conference play with a series win at home. Indiana State has won three straight weekend series but inclement weather has kept ISU from playing any midweek action since taking both games vs. Southeast Missouri State on March 15 and 16.
Meanwhile, Purdue is looking to bounce back from its first rough week of the season. The Boilermakers conceded 40 runs in their four losses last week after surrendering just 68 runs over their first 19 games. Thirty-one of the 40 runs came as part of big innings in which the opposition scored at least three times. A closer look at the inning-by-inning scoring also shows that Purdue gave up the 40 runs over 26 frames from the seventh inning Tuesday vs. UIC through the seventh inning Sunday at Illinois.
In the back-and-forth series in Champaign, the Boilermakers were the victim of two seven-run innings in the same series for the first time since the opening weekend of the 2020 campaign vs. Hofstra (in Sanford, Florida). Remarkably, Purdue managed to win three of four vs. the Pride, including the series finale that featured an eight-run inning for Hofstra. It also happened in a 2019 series sweep at Nebraska. Prior to that trip to Lincoln, an opponent had not posted a pair of seven-run innings in the same series since February 2014.
