INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The NCAA announced automatic qualifier allocations for the 2022 conference championship tournaments Thursday, unveiling the combined 88 bids earned by the Big Ten. Based on a formula that includes the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings and the Ratings Percentage Indez (RPI), the Boilermakers had seven individuals earn a top-33 spot from the coaches and eight wrestlers secure a top-33 RPI mark.
The Big Ten secured at least seven spots at every weight, including 12 automatic bids at 184 pounds, 11 at 197 pounds and 10 each at 125 and 133. The conference will account for at least 30.6 percent of the NCAA Championship field, and could increase this total based on the 43 at-large allocations that will be left after the conference tournaments.
The Boilermakers will take their shot at national championship qualifications at next weekend's Big Ten Championships, hosted by Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena on March 5-6. Purdue has placed in the top-six in each of the last two seasons, qualifying a program-record eight individuals for the national tournament at each event.
