FOX (Joe Davis, Stephen Bardo)
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The No. 7-ranked Purdue Boilermakers face one of their stiffest challenges of the season on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when it makes the short trip West to face No. 25-ranked Illinois in a late morning tilt (local time) that will have Big Ten title implications. The Boilermakers are looking to end a three-game losing skid to the Illini and record their first win in Champaign since the 2017-18 season.
The Boilermakers enter with a 14-2 overall record, while Illinois is 13-3 having won six games in a row -- all by double-digits.
The contest will be televised on FOX with Joe Davis and Stephen Bardo on the call. On the radio waves, Rob Blackman and Bobby Riddell will be courtside on the 22-station Purdue Radio Network and online on the Varsity Sports Network (app). Live stats will be provided on StatBroadcast.com and updates will be provided on Purdue's official Twitter account (@BoilerBall).
THE NOTES TO KNOW
1) The Boilermakers will wear special Martin Luther King Jr., shooting shirts for Monday's game against Illinois. The players will then autograph the shirts and auction them off online, with proceeds going to Purdue's Black Cultural Center on campus.
2) Purdue's 14-2 start is the fifth 14-2 start (or better) during the Matt Painter era (2009-10, 2010-11, 2015-16, 2017-18). A win over Illinois would match the best 17-game start of the Painter era (2010-11, 2017-18).
3) Since Feb. 1, of last season, Purdue and Loyola Chicago are the only teams without a double-digit loss. Purdue's six losses since Feb. 1, of last year have come by 1, 3, 9 (ot), 9 (ot), 2 and 5 points.
4) Purdue has scored 90 or more points in eight games this season, tied with Gonzaga for the most 90-point games in the country.
5) Purdue is looking for its third straight road win against ranked teams dating to last year (Michigan St. - Jan. 8, 2021; Ohio State - Jan. 19, 2021).
6) Purdue's seven wins by 25 or more points are the third most in the country and most in the Big Ten (Gonzaga, Kentucky - 10).
7) Purdue's bench has scored at least 25 points in 11 straight games and in 14-of-16 games this season (Indiana State, Villanova).
8) Over the last four games, Purdue's sophomore class has averaged 51.0 points per game, accounting for 60.2 percent of Purdue's scoring.
9) Zach Edey, Jaden Ivey and Trevion Williams were named to the Wooden Award midseason watch list. Purdue was the only school with three players named (Duke, Gonzaga, UCLA had two).
10) Matt Painter needs two wins to tie Ward "Piggy" Lambert (371) for second place on the Purdue career victories list.
THE SERIES WITH THE ILLINI
• Monday's MLK Day contest with Illinois marks the 193rd meeting between the two teams with Purdue holding a 102-90 series advantage. The Illini, however, have won three games in a row.
• To show how competitive this series has been, the margin of difference in points scored in the 192 previous games is 19 points (Purdue 11,103; Illinois 11,084).
• Purdue's last win in Champaign came in Feb. 2018, when a sophomore named Carsen Edwards exploded for 40 points, the most for a Purdue player in a Big Ten game since Glenn Robinson's final regular-season game against Illinois (49) in 1994.
• Purdue is the Big Ten's all-time winningest program and now needs just six wins for 1,000 Big Ten regular-season conference wins. Purdue would be the first team to accomplish that feat.
• Illinois freshman Luke Goode and Purdue Class of 2023 signee Fletcher Loyer both attended Homestead High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Spartans were No. 1 in the state and undefeated for much of Goode's senior season a year ago.
