Boilermakers Claim 4 Big Ten Weekly Honors

After teaming up for a combined eight event victories as Purdue swimming & diving's dual meet schedule resumed Friday, Hannah Hill, Brady Samuels and Luke Fortner were all recognized with a weekly honor from the Big Ten Conference.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – After teaming up for a combined eight event victories as Purdue swimming & diving's dual meet schedule resumed Friday, Hannah Hill, Brady Samuels and Luke Fortner were all recognized with a weekly honor from the Big Ten Conference.

Hill swept the Big Ten Swimmer and Freshman of the Week awards on the women's side of the league. On the men's half, Samuels was recognized as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and Fortner was tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Hill demonstrated her versatility with victories in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. She also contributed to both victorious relays, swimming the anchor leg on the 200 medley and the leadoff on the 400 free.

In his first college meet since setting a program record in the 100 butterfly at the Purdue Invitational in November, Samuels won the 100 fly by 2.05 seconds Friday with a time of 48.66. He and junior Michael Juengel were evenly matched in the 100 backstroke, with Juengel (50.04) out touching Samuels (50.08) for the win by .04 hundredths of a second. Samuels opened the meet by anchoring the Boilermakers' 200 medley relay team to victory.

Fortner continued his positive strides this season with a sweep of the breaststroke events, posting his first collegiate victories. He won the 200 breast by 2.54 seconds.

At the Purdue Invite in November, Hill set a freshman record in the 50 free (23.02) and Fortner broke two minutes (1:59.85) in the 200 breast for the first time. Friday, Hill posted the Boilermakers' second-fastest time (55.82) in the 100 back this season.

Led by Tyler Downs, a three-time Big Ten Diver of the Week and Freshman of the Week on Oct. 27, the Boilermakers have claimed 11 weekly honors from the league office this season.

Together, Hill, Samuels and Fortner accounted for five of the 10 individual event victories by true freshmen in the co-ed dual vs. the Indiana State women and Wabash College men. Classmates Sam Bennett (3-meter diving), Madeline Greaves (200 IM), Sophie McAfee (3-meter diving), Connor McCarthy (200 free) and Jordan Rzepka (1-meter diving) were also victorious.

The Boilermakers are idle from competition this weekend before returning to action Saturday, Jan. 22 for the annual co-ed rivalry dual vs. Indiana. Action in Bloomington is set for 10 a.m. ET.
