SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Purdue senior Devin Schroder advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday at the Enterprise Center, winning his first two bouts of the tournament. The Boilermakers still have all eight individuals alive in competition and are in 15th place with 12.0 points after the first two sessions, just two points shy of a spot in the top-10.
After opening his day with a win over Chattanooga's Fabian Gutierrez, Schroder was able to avenge a regular-season loss with a 2-1 decision over No. 8 seed RayVon Foley of Michigan State. After a scoreless first period, Schroder chose the bottom position in the second and scored a reversal for a 2-0 lead. Foley escaped to make it 2-1 and then picked a neutral start in the third and Schroder was able to keep the Spartan at bay and advance. Schroder will have a rematch of the 2020 and 2021 Big Ten Championship matches as he faces top-seeded Spencer Lee of Iowa.
Despite losing their first matches of the day, junior Parker Filius and freshman Jacob Rundell rebounded with wins in the consolation bracket. Filius poured it on in a 9-0 major decision over Julian Flores of Drexel at 141 pounds, while Rundell used a strong first two periods to post a 7-4 decision over Richie Koehler of Rider. Filius will face No. 16 seed Cole Matthews of Pittsburgh on Friday morning, while Rundell will see a familiar foe in Illinois' No. 7 seed Lucas Byrd.
Freshman Gerrit Nijenhuis and senior Max Lyon followed suit in the second half of Session 2, both scoring bonus-point wins. Nijenhuis needed only 3:43 to stick Hofstra's Ricky Stamm and log his team-best fourth fall of the year. The Boilermaker rookie needed little time to get on top and start scoring, posting a takedown and a turn for a 6-0 lead after the first. He took Stamm down again to start the second period and quickly put him on his back for bonus points. Nijenhuis will meet No. 13 seed Tanner Skidgel of Navy to begin Friday. Lyon gave up the first takedown to Jhaquan Anderson of Gardner Webb, but turned the tide in a major way with 11 straight points and rolled to a 14-3 major decision. Lyon advances to face No. 18 seed Alan Clothier of Northern Colorado.
Senior Griffin Parriott and sophomore Kendall Coleman both fell to the consolation bracket at 149 and 157 pounds. Parriott suffered an 8-3 loss at the hands of No. 2 seed Austin O'Connor of North Carolina, while Coleman injury defaulted with a lead in the third period against No. 8 seed Jared Franek of North Dakota State. Parriott is set to face No. 16 seed P.J. Ogunsanya of Army tomorrow, while Coleman is scheduled to face No. 7 seed Jarrett Jaques of Missouri if he's able to return.
Fellow sophomore Thomas Penola fell to the consolation bracket as well at 197 pounds, suffering an 8-4 defeat to No. 3 seed Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State. Penola will meet No. 20 seed Max Shaw of North Carolina in the wrestlebacks.
Friday's action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET with the quarterfinals for 125 through 157, airing live on ESPNU. The quarters and wrestlebacks for 165 through heavyweight will start at 3 p.m. ET.
