LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sebastian Welch gave the Purdue men's tennis team an individual title Sunday afternoon at the Louisville Invitational. The junior won his first collegiate title in the C flight main draw championship match.
The Boilermakers won six of their seven singles matches Sunday in Louisville.
Facing Louisville's Kyle Tang, Welch dominated the opening frame to win 6-1, before holding off a furious charge from Tang in the second to close out the contest 7-5.
Fellow junior Tomasz Dudek claimed runner-up honors in the singles B flight when he fell to Indiana's Ilya Tiraspolsky over three sets 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
The Boilermakers dominated the five other singles matches in consolation draws to close out the weekend. Rohan Sachdev needed just two sets to beat Luka Vukovich from Indiana. Gabriele Brancatelli cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over East Tennessee State's Juan Lombisano. Freshman Piotr Galus recorded his first career singles win in a 6-2, 6-4 decision against Marko Galic from Toledo.
Michal Wozniak tacked on a 6-1, 6-1 win in straight sets against Emil Berglund from Bellarmine, before Andre Suzanne outlasted Vlad Meluta from Toledo in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
The Boilermakers will return to the courts for the Big Ten Singles Championship
