LOUISVILLE – The Purdue men's tennis team opened its third full event of the fall with the Louisville Invitational on Friday. Juniors Tomasz Dudek and Sebastian Welch picked up wins in singles and doubles to lead the way.
The Boilermakers dealt with adverse weather conditions that forced matches to be played indoors.
In doubles, Purdue recorded a trio of wins. Tomasz Dudek and Milledge Cossu outlasted Juan Zabala and Juan Lombisano from East Tennessee State in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). Polish duo Piotr Galus and Michal Wozniak took down Mark Galic and Cole Shoults from Toledo, 6-4. Both matches came in the A flight consolation.
Julen Morgan and Sebastian Welch teamed up to oust Simeon Kostov and Donovan Ecarma from Bellarmine 6-4 in the round robin flight.
In singles, Purdue recorded wins from Morgan, Welch and Dudek . Dudek knocked off Indiana's Vikash Signh in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to progress into the second round of the B flight. Morgan followed suit in the same flight with a three set tussle against Shoults from Toledo, 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-7.
Welch held on to beat Michael Staff from Bellarmine in two sets, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the second round of the C flight.
Andre Suzanne and Wozniak both had byes on Friday and will open singles play in the C flight Saturday.
Matches are slated to begin with singles at 10 a.m.
