WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue baseball resumes its season and home schedule with an unexpected rematch with the last opponent it played, hosting Ohio State on Tuesday at Alexander Field.
First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday as the Boilermakers' first midweek home game since May 14, 2019, a win vs. Xavier.
Purdue and OSU were both idle over the weekend after their scheduled opponents – Northwestern and Minnesota – had to cancel series due to health and safety precautions. The Boilermakers and Buckeyes reached an agreement Friday to add Tuesday's game to their schedules after it was apparent all three games of their postponed series were unlikely to be rescheduled.
Purdue remains committed to rescheduling its games with Northwestern at Alexander Field for future midweek dates. Entering the week, around the Big Ten, only Northwestern (6) has played fewer home games this season than Purdue (9). The Wildcats had all four of their home games postponed the weekend of April 30 to May 3 as they were set to host Illinois and Michigan for a three-team pod.
Ohio State played in the first-ever game at Alexander Field in March 2013 and was also part of the longest game at the ballpark, a 13-inning walk-off thriller in April 2014. Tuesday will be the Buckeyes' 13th game at Alexander, second most behind only Iowa.

The finale of the Purdue-Ohio State series May 2 in Columbus was a 31-run slugfest that featured some wild back and forth scoring surges. The Buckeyes scored the first five runs of the game. The Boilermakers answered with consecutive four-run innings while scoring eight answered. Ohio State responded with seven straight runs to go back in front 12-8. Purdue scored eight unanswered runs to build a 16-12 lead and then hung on for the 16-15 victory after OSU scored the final three runs and left the tying run on the third base as the final out was recorded by Jackson Smeltz.
Both teams hit four home runs, with the Boilermakers producing two sets of back-to-back jacks. It marked only the second time the program had players go back-to-back twice in the same game since 2001. The final score accounted for just Purdue's second game of the BBCOR bat era (2011-present) in which there were a combined 30 runs scored.
With his two home runs May 2, Ben Nisle became the first Boilermaker since at least the start of the 2001 season to homer in five consecutive weekends. He also joined Daniel Underwood as the only Purdue players to be part of two sets of back-to-back home runs in the same game.
Nisle teamed with Miles Simington for the first set of back-to-back home runs. Simington is riding a 20-game on-base streak and has reached safely in 30 of Purdue's first 31 games this season.
Cory Brooks is set to become the first Boilermaker since Jack Dellinger in March 2017 to start consecutive games. On the spring break trip in California, Dellinger pitched a 2 1/3 innings in a Monday win at Cal State Northridge and 3 1/3 innings in a Thursday win at Santa Clara three days later.
