Marquette closed the game on an 16-3 run to hand the Purdue men's basketball team a 65-55 loss in the Gavitt Games at Fiserv Forum.
 
The loss was Purdue's second straight after a season-opening victory, dropping Purdue to 1-2 on the young season. Marquette improved to 2-0 on the season.
 
The Boilermakers led 38-25 at halftime, but managed to shoot just 5 of 25 (.200) in the second half, making just 1 of 10 from long distance in the final 20 minutes. Purdue ended the game making just two of its last 17 field goal attempts.
 
Purdue also hurt itself at the free throw line. The Boilermakers were 3 of 10 in the opening half and finished the game just 9 of 21 from the charity stripe for the game. Purdue was also outrebounded in the second half by a 24-14 margin after being plus-11 at the break. Purdue had 10 turnovers for the game.
 
Purdue led almost the entire game, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and seizing control of the opening half with a 19-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 38-20 with 1:59 to play on a Sasha Stefanovic triple.
 
Marquette would slowly chip away at the lead, cutting the lead to 43-39 with 14:54 to play on a Theo John 3-point play. After Marquette tied the game at 49 with 6:48 to play, Jahaad Proctor gave Purdue the lead right back with a 3-pointer for a 52-49 lead with 6:04 to play. That would be Purdue's last field goal of the game as Marquette rallied at the free throw line for the 65-55 decision.
 
It marked Marquette's first win in 10 tries all-time against the Boilermakers. Purdue fell to 1-2 all-time in the Gavitt Games.
 
Matt Haarms led Purdue with 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while Proctor added 13 points. Eric Hunter Jr. had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Aaron Wheeler tallied six points, seven rebounds and five assists.
 
Purdue hosts Chicago State on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET, in Mackey Arena.
