BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – The Purdue women's tennis team dropped the final match of the Bonita Bay FineMark Classic/FGCU Invite on Sunday afternoon. The Boilermakers fell to host FGCU 4-2 in third match of the weekend.
Purdue fell behind after the hosts claimed the opening doubles point. Maja Ornberg and Sara Kelly defeated Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Seira Shimizu 6-1. Zala Dovnik and Alex Sabe fell to Alba Retortillo and Lourdes Ramalle in a 6-1 decision.
In singles play, the Boilermakers took wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, but FGCU sealed the match with wins at No. 1, 4 and 5.
Sabe topped Sara Kelly in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Csilla Fodor also made quick work of her opponent Ida Ferding 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
FGCU picked up a point on No. 1 as Ena Babic fell to Maja Ornberg 6-3, 6-3. Ramalle outlasted Dovnik 6-7(4), 7-5, 10-7 on No. 4, and Zeynep Naz Ozturk dropped her match to Retortilla in a tiebreak, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
The tournament marked the end of the Boilermakers' fall campaign. Purdue will return to the court for the spring duel season Jan. 18 with a doubleheader against Xavier and Bowling Green at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
